My Dell Alienware Aurora R9 won’t update to 23H2. Currently, it’s on Windows 11 Pro, 21H2. I know it’s an older machine, but I have 64GB RAM, decent size SSD for the OS, and a spinner for data. Most of my data (photos and videos) is kept on a Synology NAS.
I use Windows Update, which says it is ready for version 23H2. Something downloads and goes through a process of updating and restarting and then does a rollback and I’m back to where I started. In Update History, I find “Failed to install on 8/5/2024 – 0xc1900101” and a list containing more “Failed to install” dates with 0xc1900107.
KB5001716 was successfully installed on 8/2/2024, and also Security Updates on various dates going back.
The Dell /Alienware diagnostics say that my machine BIOS & drivers are up to date, it passes the low level diagnostic hardware tests. My NVIDIA card drivers are current. I’ve unplugged all external drives and miscellaneous devices (that has made no difference!).
I’m stumped and running out of time and patience to troubleshoot. This is my primary desktop and I use it every day for photo editing and genealogy research. The photo editing apps are hogs when I need to have several of them open at a time so I want the OS to be running as well as it can.
I might be wrong here, but it seems like getting 23H2 installed might allow me to get more useful life from this machine.
Looking for advice, please, that doesn’t require digging under the hood too deeply. I briefly looked at SetupDiag and concluded those logs/reports are way beyond my pay grade.
