How to get new experiences for Windows 11

Windows 11, version 24H2 – also referred to as the Windows 11 2024 Update – has reached general availability. Today we also announce new Copilot+ PC innovations that enable more natural and conversational engagement with your devices.

The Windows 11 2024 Update contains new features, including enhanced battery saver, Bluetooth LE Audio, HDR background support, and support for Wi-Fi 7. Learn more in What’s new inside this update.

We recommend that you begin a targeted deployment to validate that your apps, devices, and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. For details on the overall rollout strategy for this release, see How to get new experiences for Windows 11. For insight into the experience for people running the Home and Pro editions on devices not managed by an organization, see How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update.

    When will this happen:

For commercial organizations, availability of Windows 11, version 24H2 begins today through familiar channels, such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Windows Update for Business. It is also available for Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop.

How this will affect your organization:

Today, October 1, 2024, marks the start of 36 months of servicing support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 11, version 24H2.

You can prepare for and deploy Windows 11, version 24H2 using the same processes, policies, and management solutions you use for the original release of Windows 11 or Windows 10. Popular tools, such as the security baseline, administrative templates (ADMX), and the Group Policy settings reference have been updated for version 24H2. For information on features and improvements for commercial organizations, and links to the latest deployment tools and onboarding kits, see What’s new for IT pros in Windows 11, version 24H2.

What you need to do to prepare:

You can use Windows Update for Business, Microsoft Intune, or your preferred endpoint management solution to deploy Windows 11, version 24H2. This update is a full operating system (OS) swap that contains new foundational elements required to deliver transformational AI experiences and exceptional performance. Endpoints managed by Windows Update for Business will not be automatically updated to Windows 11, version 24H2 unless you explicitly set it up. To do this, configure a Target Version via the TargetReleaseVersion setting using a Windows CSP, a feature update profile in Microsoft Intune, or the Select the target Feature Update version setting in Group Policy.

    Additional information:

A list of currently supported Windows versions by servicing option – along with release dates, build numbers, end of service dates, and release history – is available on the Windows 11 release information page. Windows 11, version 24H2 known issues (and resolutions) have been added to the Windows release health section of the Microsoft 365 admin center. Dedicated pages for known and resolved issues will be added with the October 2024 security update for Windows 11, version 24H2.

If you need help with deployment, or are looking for tips and best practices, join Windows Office Hours every third Thursday on the Windows Tech Community. This monthly chat-based Q&A on the Tech Community is supported by the Windows, Intune, and Windows 365 product teams.

      Hey Y’all,

Currently running Win 11 Pro 23H2 on UNSUPPORTED HARDWARE (7th Gen Processor).

      1. Imaged Canary.
      2. Released GRC InControl.
      3. Changed Targeted Ed. to Windows 11 24H2 in Group Policy.
      4. Rebooted.

Can’t get Windows Update to present the 24H2 update!

Tried to use the Registry Key to allow installing w/o Restrictions.

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup]
      "AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOOrCPU"=dword:00000001

Rebooted and still can’t get the upgrade to present.

Considering trying an Over-the-Top install with an ISO if it’s available.

      UPDATE:
Tried to download the 24H2 ISO file and got this:
      Validating-Your-Request
It’s been at least 45 minutes and the screen hasn’t changed. FYI, I’m doing this post on my production machine.

In the past when I did feature release updates on unsupported hardware – and remember this is a OS swap out so it’s not an incremental update – I had to do a manual iso upgrade.

      Hey Y’all,

      Next iteration…

      Tried downloading Win11MediaCreationTool.
Informed me that my machine doesn’t meet minimum requirements!
Looks like MS is checking all avenues…

So I switched to my Production machine which does meet the requirements.
Downloaded the ISO in less that 10 minutes.
Now we’ll see if I can get it to install on Canary…Stay tuned.

        The Canary is ALIVE!

        Here’s the timeline:
        16:24 – Started Setup.exe from mounted ISO
        16:48 – 1st Reboot @ 100% on Blue Screen
        16:49 – 2nd Reboot @ 3% on Black Screen
        16:52 – 3rd Reboot @ 37% on Black Screen
        16:55 – 4th Reboot @ 0% – Jumped to 58% immediately
16:58 – Fully booted into Windows!
        24H2-Installed

Reinstalled Start-All-Back (3.8.9) need to select “Plain 8” to get custom tool bars. I couldn’t live w/o this!

CyberPower PowerPanel will not connect using latest version 2.6.0!
UPDATE: Turns out it was the cable which I swore worked before I installed 24H2.
However, another cable and it works just fine!

        Conclusions:

        • You can’t get Win 11 on non-supported hardware directly.
        • You need to download an ISO using a machine with SUPPORTED hardware.
        • Load the ISO file on the machine you want to update, mount the ISO, run the setup.exe file and you should be good.
        • You may want to use the Registry hack above. I don’t know if it was necessary or not but it was there when I did the update.
        • Be prepared for some software incompatibilities, at least to the companies roll out new updates.

Note: the above are MY observations and are far from exhaustive testing! As always YMMV.

      Hey Y’all,

Just installed Win 11 24H2 on my main driver.

      1. Changed Target Version to 24H2 in Group Policy.
      2. Ran Windows Update. The update was immediately offered.
      3. Download and Install.
      4. 1 Hour later 24H2.

Note: there is a new version of StartAllBack out 3.8.11. The Lock All Taskbars option works. Not sure this ever worked before. I had to unlock it to reinstall my custom toolbar after 24H2 installed as it was missing.

      UPDATE:
I’m now getting a strange message when I open Outlook 365.
      OUTLOOK_1QHOmAbYdM
Clicking OK then Cancel on the next screen brings up Outlook with all my stuff there???

I checked the TBW Image I took just before doing the update and the file wasn’t there!
Looks like some googling in in my future…

        Hey y’all,

All kinds of stuff started happening to my Office 365 Outlook (fonts changing, views changing, etc.), PowerToys wouldn’t run correctly, and Snipping tool wouldn’t work.

I’d finally had enough and restored my pre-update image using IFW and everything is back to normal.

I may give it another wack via an over-the-top install using an ISO file and see if that works any better.

Ok, here’s the results of the Over-the-Top install.

          It took about 40 minutes!

Most of the minor annoyances were fixed by an EXTRA reboot.

However, the messed up Outlook 365 persists. Can’t make up my mind if I want to stay with 24H2 and find a fix for the Outlook problems or revert and try again later.

Interestingly enough on my “Canary” which does not meet the hardware requirements the Over-the-Install did NOT cause any of the problems I’ve encountered with my Daily Driver which is fully hardware compliant! And before you ask I used the SAME ISO file on both machines. If you check my post about that you’ll notice that I had to download the ISO using my Daily Driver!

          Update:

Ok, it’s fixed. I used the dialog box that I had been dismissing to create a NEW Calendar Subscription file. It requires you to setup a password so remember to check the Remember Password box or it will prompt you for it every time you open Outlook.

So after fixing that I just went in and reset my View settings so these old eyes could read the screen and all is good. At least, until I discover some other annoyance.

            Hey Y’all,

Well my main driver with W11 Pro 24H2 was humming along just fine until about 2 hours ago. All of the sudden my Outlook 365 lost its screen formatting and dropped the favorites in the navigation bar. It would not let me put them back…

A little investigating showed me that I’d been “UPGRADED” to the Insider Preview channel Monthly. And who’s Idea was this surely not mine!

Further more it wouldn’t let me switch back. I tried using the provided option but it said it wouldn’t take effect until the next time O365 updated, i.e. next monthly cycle.
I tried to force the issue by using the PS program I wrote to change the channel. I ran the program and checked SemiAnnual Enterprise. It duly downloaded and after it was finished I rebooted. Much to my surprise it didn’t change a thing!

Ok now it’s time for the old Image For Windows and reload my last image of the C: drive which happened to be just BEFORE I did the over-the-top install of 24H2. Whoa…surprise IFW started to rebuild the Recovery partition to include IFW. Looks like 24H2 fiddled with that also. Nice of IFW to fix that little problem for me, taking notes MS?

Now I’m back on 23H2 and everything is as it was. Looks like I’ll give this a little more time to age before trying it again on my daily driver.

Meanwhile, back on “Canary” (which has unsupported hardware) things are perking along w/o change.

            SemiAnnual-Enterprise

I’ll be keeping an eye on this!

OOPS! well I was a little premature with that last assessment. Seems somewhere along the line IFW got blown out of the water on “Canary” too! It’s an easy fix and it’s good to know that I’ll have to keep an eye on that when I do upgrades.

May the Forces of good computing be with you!
