Ok, folks, please correct me if I’m wrong about this statement:

When using WU to make the jump from one version (such as 1909 or 2004) to another (such as 20h2 or 21H1), the current monthly update is included automatically as part of the change depending on when in the month it’s done, correct or not quite? An example is in the next paragraph.

So, for example, if someone goes from one version to a newer version before Patch Tuesday in a given month, they will automatically receive the prior month’s patch for the version they’re going to. If they perform the transition after Patch Tuesday in a given month, they’ll then automatically receive the current month’s patch for the version they’re going to. Correct?

I’m asking this question so I can properly time my “leap of faith” from 2004 to 20H2.

I’m not worried about settings in gpedit, as I know just what to change in order to get 20H2 to show up in WU and what to change things back to afterwards.

    Thanks!

If you update Windows versions you get the latest version from the MS web site, which probably contains patches from a few weeks ago.
As part of the update MS will most likely install the latest patches.

Either way, we’re at DEFCON2 so don’t update unless you have a known good backup and can easily revert.

Ok, but I’d still like to know exactly what happens…based upon the scenario described above…which monthly update is included when? I.E. is last month’s patch included if you make the change before the current month’s Patch Tuesday, and is the current month’s monthly patch included if you make the change after the current month’s Patch Tuesday?

Another way to put it, I guess: For this month, January of 2021, Patch Tuesday was on January 12th. If I were to use WU to make the change to 20H2 from today (January 23rd) until February 8th, will I get 20H2 with the January monthly update included?

If I had done the same thing, but back on January 11th, would I have gotten 20H2 with the December monthly update included instead?
