    Hey Woody & co,

I was wondering what your take is on using blocking apps that reduce/remove many of Microsoft’s spying. I have seen many apps that do just this but I am wondering whether you think they’re good or nothing more than a hazard themselves. To be honest the only reason I haven’t fully adopted Windows 10 is because of privacy concerns and software compatibility.

    Many thanks,

I think you would be better off trying to understand what those applications propose to do and if this is what you want, make the configurations yourself by using supported methods, either by using the GUI (preferred for single machines, home users) or Local Group Policy Editor if it is available in your version.
Most applications which do system wide changes have undesired side-effects and you would be much better by not installing them.

I’m going to tackle the topic at some point. It’s very complex – and as @ch100 says, fraught with problems.

A good place to start from is probably to use a local Windows account only, and do not sign on to Windows with your Microsoft Account.

Then go to the privacy tab in Windows settings and turn everything off.

For the rest, Google is your friend …

Microsoft does not publicly disclose what the data that they collect. You can choose to believe what Microsoft says or not about the data they collect and what they do with it. The huge hue and cry is FUD in my opinion. Also IMO, it is disingenuous to worry about Microsoft’s data collection and then continue to use any online service from almost any other vendor. There are very, very few who do not collect everything they possibly can about you and your behavior on their property.
