    We have a Think Pad Edge (Product # 0578A99 Type 0578-A99) that we purchased in 2011.

    It is running Windows 10.

    Every 6 months or so we dusted it off and update Windows.

    Today we took it out and the PC asked for a password.  Our practice to setup our computers using local accounts and do not recall assigning a password to the ThinkPad.

    Is there a way to work around the Windows login without using a Windows password?

    And yes, because the machine is out of use we do not have a backup or clone of the drive. Shame on us.

    Any thoughts?

      The problem just solved itself.

      Started the laptop and it booted without a password.

        Now that you have access to the laptop, make an image backup.

        On permanent hiatus {with backup and coffee}

      After trying multiple old (and over used) passwords managed to boot the system and then update its Windows 10 login password.

      Problem solved.
