Is this like the rogue build they accidentally leaked to the public a couple weeks back?

OMG, A NEW START MENU!!! That’s big Big BIG!!!! One might even say YUGE (if one were prone to Twittering a lot)!

Well, but of course we needed a new Start menu!!! What’s a Windows release without a new one of those? Oh, I remember now – useful. LOL

In all seriousness, I installed Classic Shell and was happy, am happy, and will be happy.

Please wake me again when Windows does something impressive. 🙂

You may have a Rip Van Winkle style beard by then. But, with your system, you may have set a new uptime record in the process.

Classic Shell is what single handedly saved Windows 8.1 for me. Good program.

I’ve used it in Win7! And one of the reasons I am so keen on 1511 is because it’s the closest to Win7, when they have not had enough time to mess it up. And there are all sorts of tips, utils, scripts and tweaks that allowed me to make it look like I am running Win7.

And part of the reason is Classic Shell.

Classic Shell, Old New Explorer, and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker (along with my custom Windows theme) have made 8.1 a valid choice for me, along with a ton of registry edits.

To that list of de-weirding programs for 8.1, I’ve recently added Metro Killer, which does what it says on the tin.  Classic Shell gave the option of turning off the lower right hot corner for charms (Windows itself only gives the option for the top right one to be disabled), but with Metro Killer, it’s like it (and the Metro sidebar on the right) just don’t exist.  Good riddance!

All of these but Metro Killer also work in Windows 10.   I’d love to have a UWP killer in Windows 10, but too much of the stuff that used to be native Win32 is UWP now for that to be feasible.

What a sad state when users want to kill what is presented as improvements and upgrades.

There is absolutely NOTHING in all the new stuff that I have any need for, or even that I could force myself to use in some way.

Not sure why Microsoft couldn’t have built in the ability to go either with Metro or with the W7 start button. If they would have provided that option, most of the controversy surrounding Windows 8 and beyond would never have materialized.

The Windows 8.1 UI without Classic Shell is an awkward mess for typical desktop use.  Statistics seem to indicate that there aren’t many Windows 8.1 systems out there.  I’ll hazard a guess that Classic Shell has saved 8.1 from total extinction.

They finally added network settings for public & private profiles after several years. I hope and expect to see some hacks for the accessibility color filters tool.

I have argued more than once that the tech staff of tech corps are so far away from the average computer user that they are incapable of coming up with products that are useful for them. They come up with stuff that THEY think it’s “cool” and that is usually stupid useless stuff.

So they’ve changed a lot of things that nobody cared about but haven’t changed the things people are crying out for, like control over updates and telemetry. Why is this not in the least surprising?

        I don’t think that’s the reality, unfortunately.

We interact here with like-minded, enlightened users who speak against telemetry and project to users at large. But my guess is that most non-corporate Win10 users don’t care about telemetry or update control. Which is what MS relies on. Most of the people who want stability or understand the issues either have stayed with 7/8 (hence the large number there) or are capable of having some measure of control, such as people here.

My conversations with people is most are not aware of the extent of the telemetry on W10 as it is only discussed in the tech press when it is discussed. The local fish wrap and related purveyors of fake news are too lazy and probably too stupid to understand the implications of W10’s telemetry. Thus they say nothing about it.

I have tried to upgrade my Insiders Preview from 16199 to 16215 twice through WU with failure 0x80070643. Some of what I’ve read says this is related to Defender. The download/install takes forever, the first time over night. Will clean out everything and try again later today.

Ho Hum! nice graphics, but errm dont we all have functioning start Menus in one form or another?
Love the appeal to those with creative juices and for “maniacal” gamers awsome, but it would be nice, you know really nice; If we got away from the newest Gadgets and got with solid performing, reliable workstations not subject to the whims of unreliable patches. Heck I would even settle for 90% compatability with various Document formats that doesent take me on an odessy of looking for a compatible file app and when they do open can they please open in the format and layout in which they were sent, you know “as nature intended” lol 🙂
I would even go with 90 + % not crashing Office on a whim attempting to open other formats.
Strangely business and I think that would be really cool or are we being a little old fashioned here?

Couldn’t have?! They for sure have all the insight to choose otherwise. I suppose…

They should indeed include every microSoft shell under ‘themes’. That way we could choose everything to likings… even back to dos 3.3 if we prefered…

Sorry for another ot rant! 😛

A very good point, not a rant.  MS could do a lot of things they simply choose not to do.  They take things away that most of us have come to like and are comfortable with.  Then when they give one or two of these things back they’re so wonderful.  Bah Humbug!

My Insider Preview is giving a GSOD (it’s green, not blue now) stop code of INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE consistently now. I see this is a common error on the forums. Guess I’ll stick with 1703 Build 16199 for a while longer.
