    At the same time as upgrading to Win 10 (from 7 Pro), I want to upgrade my HDD.

    I think I understand how to do a clean install, but can I do it to a new bare drive or do I have to do a clone operation on the 2 drives.

      If you have already upgraded to 10 then you can perform a clean install to the new disk, otherwise it’s clone, boot, upgrade.
