I hope this is the correct forum

We use Windows Picture and Fax viewer which has the Photo printing wizard. It shows you thumbnails of the photos available to print and you tick the ones you want. After printing we delete the files as we don’t need them any more, but some of these files still keep showing up as a thumbnail when you use the wizard again.

I assume these are temporary files. Where would I find them so I can delete them or any idea how to prevent these temporary photos showing up again?

Not an easy one to trace, I can tell you! I have been plagued with these for a while and only now have found how to get rid of them!

OK, right-clicking on a displayed image and selecting properties will give you the file location. In my case, it was:
C:Documents and Settingsmy_usernameLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesOLK79

The OLK79 I think I recognise as being a default save-to location for images received in Outlook, but when using Windows Explorer to locate it, it didn’t seem to exist.
However, I eventually found it by closing Outlook (not sure if that is necessary) and pasting the file location into the address bar in Windows Explorer and hitting return. There was the OLK79 folder, and a quick SelectAll and delete and all my phantom photos have disappeared.

Mine was OLK54, it was full of other things but deleting the images got rid of the phantom photos.

I have added the path to Favorites so I can keep it sorted. Any idea on how to prevent these things lingering there?

I’m not sure what causes them to stay there. I’ve done a bit of playing and it seems specifically tied to images received in Outlook.
If you open an email with an attached picture and open it with the Viewer, you can see the file appear in the TIF folder, then disappear when you close it. I’m wondering if it may be connected to forwarding pictures as attachments, or perhaps moving the associated email to another folder.

I may move this thread to Outlook as it does seem tied to it…

Outlook is -supposed- to remove these files when it is closed, and with XP/Office 2003 it does for me. But if it helps any, the default location for Outlook to store the temporary files can be changed, see MaryJ’s Outlook Starpost; users may be able to point the location where they want and add a startup batch file to clean certain files out of that location.

I personally clean it out manually, because I routinely edit work files in attachments without first saving them to disk, and if Outlook blows up or the power goes out, my last saved version is in that temporary location. (Yes, I know it’s dangerous to edit files directly in Outlook message attachments, but I do a lot of edit-and-return work, and I only get burned about once in 500 items.)
