Recently revisited Winaero Tweaker to find that they have introduced some new tweaks and enhancements that seem very useful for those who use Windows 10.

    Unwanted Windows 10 Updates
This release comes with improvements which allow the app to reliably disable updates and annoying forced reboots in Windows 10.

Backup and Restore Start Menu Layout
Another frequently requested feature. It is finally implemented in the app, so you can quickly backup and restore the appearance of your Start menu in Windows 10 with a couple of clicks

    Import/Export of Bookmarks
It was another popular feature request. Now it is implemented. The Import/export wizard of Winaero Tweaker allows you to export and import your bookmarks the same way you export/import the tweaks.

These were my top picks and there’s more here:

Different program AND Classic Start (based on Classic Shell/ Open-Shell) has it’s own backup configuration 🙂

I like the one where it fixes 1803 to show your other computers on the network. I don’t have 1803 yet but I know it will be forced at some point.

For some strange reason, Winaero kills my media streaming.  I’ve tested this thoroughly.  I don’t even have to make a single tweak in the program.  Just installing it immediately kills my media streaming.

Winaero Tweaker 1.20.1: get back Windows 10 Start menu and taskbar in Windows 11

A quick update here. Winaero Tweaker 1.20.1 is now available with the only one new option. It now allows you to restore the classic appearance in Windows 11 by restoring the classic Start menu with live tiles and the taskbar which were available in Windows 10.

I’ve added a new section to the app, called “Windows 11”. There, I will add new tweaks for pre-release OS versions. Once it reaches the production branch, I will move them into the appropriate groups, similar to what I did for Windows 10…

      Version 1.30 released

      Download: https://winaero.com/winaero-tweaker-1-30-is-here-allows-you-to-move-windows-11-taskbar-and-more/

Some interesting tweaks in this one for those taskbar annoyances in windows 11

      New features:

You can add Task Manager to the Desktop context menu (this works in all supported Windows versions).
You can add Group Policy to the Desktop context menu (in all supported Windows versions).
You can add “Restart Explorer” to the Desktop context menu in all supported Windows versions.

      Added two new tools:

You can create desktop shortcuts to Shut down, Restart, Hibernate and Sleep actions in all Windows versions. Save your time using such shortcuts. For “shut down”, you can create both
the full shut down shortcut (turns off the OS without the hibernation data, next start is cold start) and hybrid shut down shortcut (next start will be done with Fast Startup).
If you tray icons (notification area/taskbar corner overflow) look broken, you can now reset their cache using Winaero Tweaker.

Windows 11: Added a number of improvements to the “Classic Taskbar” feature. After enabling it, you can quickly turn on the clock, network, and sound icons. There is a link for that.
Windows 11: Added a dedicated option to restore the Ribbon in File

      Explorer
Windows 11: You can now move the taskbar to the top, left or right side of the screen. The left and right side taskbar is still half-baked, as Microsoft doesn’t officially support the taskbar moving.

      Fixes:
Fixed Windows 10 version 21H2 detection. It was reported as 21H1.
Fixed the context menu\ remove default entries\ pin to start removal. The “Pin to Start” command was only removed for files. Now it also disappears for folders.
Fixed the Shell Folder shortcut option. Once you create a shell folder shortcut, the option used to appear in the “Recently changed” list. That’s wrong; this doesn’t change anything on your computer.

      Winaero Tweaker 1.31.0.1

A quick update to Winaero Tweaker users. I have resolved a rare but annoying bug in the app. Some of you may have seen the application crash with an unfriendly error message in the PopulateFavorites() routine. Thanks to “CodyDaWolf”, I have figured out what is going on, and resolved the bug

Does Winaero Tweaker have a breadcrumbs feature?  I’ve always been a bit leery about using tweakers after using one a long time ago, and getting into a bind, without remembering, or having properly documented, how I got there.  I think that I ended up doing a complete re-install.

      Winaero Tweaker 1.32

      Release Notes

With Winaero Tweaker 1.32 you can now enable the classic (full) context menus on Windows 11. Just turn on the checkbox and restart the Explorer.

I have changed the behavior of the “Enable Ribbon” option for Windows 11. It no longer disables the “Share” command, so it enables the Ribbon UI without side effects.

Finally, I have fixed the “Change system font” option. It should not produce the “square” icon instead of the “:” for the clock in the taskbar. Also, it shouldn’t interfere with the Anki app…

      Winaero Tweaker 1.40

      Changes in Winaero Tweaker 1.40:

The app now properly detects Windows 11 version 22H2.

Changed how it shows the available memory size.

You can now use it to remove the Add to favorites item from the context menu.

Also, when you remove “Open in Terminal” from the context menu using Winaero Tweaker, it now also removes the “Open in Terminal Preview” command if you have the latter installed.

If you set Windows Spotlight as your desktop background, you can remove its icon from the desktop.

Using Winaero Tweaker 1.40, you can make the taskbar show tray icons in two or three rows.

Updated the “Disable SmartScreen” to disable it for Store apps.

You can now enable the “Desktop Stickers” hidden feature in Windows 11 22H2+.

There is an option to enable Recycle Bin for removable drives.

The option to disable Windows ads has been updated to work properly in Windows 11.

Added the “Restart Explorer” option to Tools in Winaero Tweaker. Sometimes I need to restart it quickly. Maybe some of you will also find the new option useful.

      Other changes

In Windows 11 version 22H2 the ability to re-enable the ribbon UI in File Explorer has gone. Also in this version, Microsoft doesn’t allow to move the newer taskbar from the bottom. So I am hiding these options on 22H2+.
Finally, I have done general fixes and improvements which doesn’t change anything in the UI of the app. For example, “Disable Web Search” requires you to sign out from your user account, but Tweaker didn’t show the request.

There is an option to enable Recycle Bin for removable drives.

In the File Explorer module the Tweaker makes no distinction for Win 10 or 11 BUT the How To link offered in the Tweaker Setting when checked says — Restart Win 11 — Not Restart Windows. No evidence of the Bin in either a Win 10 Pen drive or USB WD MyPassport. I saw the fffff 32-DWord in the Registry presumably made by the Tweaker but no luck. FYI

Running the setup.exe after extraction always gets an access denied error.

Windows automatically blocks files downloaded from the internet from being run.

To unlock it, right-click the file, check the Unblock box at the bottom and click OK.

          UnblockDownloadedFiles

There’s also a Group Policy you can set that will prevent Windows from blocking downloaded files.

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Attachment Manager and enable the “Do not preserve zone information in file attachments” option.

That being posted, is it wise to unblock downloaded files/ attachments by default across the whole OS with GP?

Like many other suggestions here on AskWoody, it’s up to each individual to determine the “level of risk” entailed in using it.

Since my anti-virus S/W scans files as they’re downloaded before it allows me to access them and I only download stuff from “reputable” locations, I saw no reason to also have to deal with “Windows” blocking my access to them and implemented that particular GP.

              Of course, YMMV.

            • #2563231

Since my anti-virus S/W scans files as they’re downloaded before it allows me to access them

Your A/V won’t help you in this case.

            • #2563273

              Actually, it will!

While it won’t prevent access to a “spoofed” .zip/.mov site, it will detect that something’s being downloaded which will kick off its scanning process.

It saves all downloads to a “temporary” location, scans them for possible threats, and; if none are found; then puts them in the real download location on my PC.

If it detects a threat, it deletes the “pending download” from the temp location and pops up a notification explaining why it was blocked with an option to add an exception if I choose to.

If I choose to add the exception, I have to restart the download as the original file is no longer located on my PC!

And yes, this procedure does mean it takes a bit longer for my downloads to complete, but that’s better than possibly getting infected!
