I’ve got an old winbook xl running win98se with a disagreeable virus that won’t let me download antivirus, closes ie with the error message “this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down,” and takes me to porn sites.

I have an older win98 disk – but it says that it is older than what is running now and setup is disabled. I do not have a win98se disk.

    Any ideas?

Abesent any solution – is it possible to do a clean install of xp on this machine? If so, I have an older Dell xp os disk and an older xp os disk from Gateway. Will I need product codes and where do I find them?

    Thanks.

If the Dell and Gateway CDs are OEM versions of XP you will not be able to install on the winbook. OEM media is tied to the hardware with which it was originally delivered.

If the winbook has a USB port you could install a portable version of A/V. See ultimate list of portable anti-viruses for usb for links.

I fear I have some difficulty trusting pages such as this which do not indicate the date updated. From the comments this information appears to be almost three years old – a life-time in this business.

I’m wondering if the USB will immediately respond on a win98 machine. I’ve never tried to boot from USB on such an old machine, but I do know it is quite difficult to get win98 machines to recognize a USB drive – usually one has to search all over the place for drivers.

I guess if the USB approach can be used, would not Windows Defender Offline be a more reliable and up-to-date solution?

I don’t see why you can’t use your Windows 98 disk that you have and search the internet for
      stored updates similar to this.

        Hi Clint –

An update, – I installed XP on this machine. It ran far too slow to accomplish anything, so installed Win98. Is there a patch that will allow me to use my wi-fi card that worked on the old win98se? Thanks.

You have to find a Win98 driver for the card. Probably very difficult if not impossible. Check the card manufacturer’s web site.

Many cards are available for Windows 98 Second edition. Cards that support the original version of windows 98 are harder to find. Yours may only be supported by 98se.

According to the MS web pages, these should work on original Windows 98:

Cardbus: Orinoco Classic Gold PC Card
      PCI: Netgear MA311, Orinoco 11b

      USB: Netgear MA101, Netgear MA111
      Cardbus: Netgear MA401, Microsoft MN-520
