    Suddenly Win98SE insists on booting into Safe Mode. If I force it into Normal mode, it quickly shuts down. This is repeated every time I boot up.

      After it boots into safe mode, have you checked the device manager to see if anything unusual is showing up there – any yellow exclamations over any of your entries? Did you add any new hardware recently? It could be a device driver causing your computer grief.
