Win7/Pro x64: Office 2000 worked briefly but now “Not Responding”

Recently I finally got Win7/Pro x64 up and running and installed Office 2000. It installed in the path Program Files (x86) and seemed to be working. That was until today, when both Word and Excel show up as ‘not responding.’

How do I troubleshoot this?

Could it be an activation problem? Unfortunately I didn’t keep notes about the install process.

Could it be a recent Win7 update that killed the use of this 32 bit software?

I know I could move to Open Office. I’ve played with it a few times. I don’t want to try to climb up its learning curve while I’m trying to accommodate to the Win7 changes and fight other brush fires that have sprung up as a result of the OS install.

Office 2000 is not fully compatible with Windows 7 and is not supported on it. IIRC, the incompatibility was not remembering Outlook passwords.

Have you tried reinstalling Office? Have you checked the Event Logs? Do you have a restore point back to a point in time where you are sure it was working?

You might be better off searching at the Microsoft Community Forums.

Have you checked out either of the Office 365 suites? Office 365 Home[/url] – For 5 PCs or Macs, and 5 tablets like Windows tablets and iPads®, plus easy access on multiple smartphones. I don’t use Outlook (I moved from Netscape to SeaMonkey years ago and stayed.)

I will try reinstalling Office. Can I do it without an uninstall or is that just likely to complicate things even more?

I looked in event logs and can’t make sense of what I see. BTW, the path to the viewer at MS could be simplified. All one needs to do it open the Control Panel and search for ‘event viewer.’ It beats hunting for the term in a long list. It found 1 critical error in the last 7 days, 17 (85) errors, 3 (31) Warnings, 547 (3,007) information, and 216 (1090) Audit Success in the last 24 hours (7 days.)

I’ve been busy reinstalling other software. I’m not excited about trying a Restore Point and then working out what needs to be reinstalled and configured if I can avoid it.

I’ve been occupied trying to recover the use of a 128 Gb SSD that is tied up as System Reserved. I tried both ‘clean’ and ‘clean all’ using the command prompt in the version of Windows that opens with my USB stick installation ISO. Both failed citing an obscure I/O error. I am downloading PartedMagic to see if that can restore it to functionality.

I just recalled that in all this shuffling around I believe that as I rebooted one time yesterday Windows decided to do run CHKDSK and it made a bunch of ‘repairs’ to my data disk (no program files resident.) I captured some of what I saw with my ‘primitive screen dump technique’ of snapping digital photos of the monitor with the flash turned off.

You can try it as it might repair what was wrong. I think it’s most likely to be an update that did it in, as Joe says, it’s just too old
and questionably compatible.

After uninstall/install, if it isn’t functioning properly, you might try running it from another user profile just to make sure it’s nothing in your own user profile that’s messed up. So far I don’t have any compatibility issues with Office 2000 SR-1 even in W8.1 with Update, though I’m definitely planning on not using Outlook.

Fourteen year old software in a modern OS is similar to giving a 114 year old Grand mother a new Corvette.
One would not expect Grandma to run perfectly or even efficiently. YMMV

I just remembered, if you are only using Word and Excel for basic everyday stuff you can still get Office Word and Excel Starter 2010 for Win 7 for free. I was going to use that on my W8 system but it wrapped itself around a tree so to speak during the install, so I went back a decade.

Thank you, everybody, for the suggestions. I’ve done a bit of hunting myself. The proper selection of ‘Compatibility Mode’ may be important. A ‘compatibility check’ in Word recommended XP SP-2 (not SP-3) compatibility. I’ve changed Word and Excel for now.

I reopened a Word document (Read Only Mode) and it did not report as ‘Not Responding.’ I’ve played a bit, but I have ‘other fish to fry’ just now so further testing may take a few days. I hope it proves a longer term solution. I tried OO and got frustrated.

One frequent use of Word is to ‘document’ procedures. For instance, I may make a change and want to keep track of what I did. I do screen dumps and resize them in PSE 6 and paste them into a Word document with interspersed comments. OO kept wanting to put the image on top of each other. It took a lot of effort to keep them separated. It is probably a failure on my part to really understand how to use the software properly, but, hey, I do know how to make it happen with Word (and I fought long and hard before I gave up WordPerfect.)

I run Office 2000 Premium version on my Win7 64 bit Laptop; no worries after i worked out what Windows/Microsoft update had done in in-stalling later versions of SP1 SP2 that are designed for later versions of Office.
I have been granted life time support by Microsoft following a request for download support after i worked out Windows update had changed, locked three/four Registry Keys, blocking my gaining Admin Permissions Privileges to change permissions.
Eventually using Unlocker i managed to access two of the keys.
Part old support email from me to Microsoft follows.
I have twice installed SP2 to find SP2 had corrupted my Office 2000 SP1, SP2, SP3 installation, since have restored to an earlier state using an image program, I’ve done that twice after installing SP2.

Eventually i managed to re-install the whole Office Premium 2000 programs and again in-cased Office 2000 files in its proper SP1 SP2 and SP3 files, only two other problems arose…You cant use Outlook 2000 and Office 2000 has missing a file first shipped with XP that allows you to convert PDF to a Word .doc, to get round that i downloaded Open Office which resolved that issue.
I paid for and like Office 2000 Premium (has FrontPage etc) and encased in its proper SP1,2 and 3 is operating within netframwork running on computer in its proper 2000 mode

I too have Win 7 pro 64bit.
I installed Office 2000 and it work just fine for a while, then it started getting little glitchs, little thing would not work.
I then installed the free program Microsoft Office 2010 Starter.
Now Office 2000 works just fine with no glitchs.
Hope it works for you.
