Win7 on toshiba1900

Hi all,

The process of installing the windows 7 operating system on a old Toshiba1900 is smoothly.

The system works fine until the first restart, then only reboot it self over and over.

I think its a ATA HD driver problem, but i dont have sure about it.

any soul who as an ideia about how to fix this is very welcome.

Is this an upgrade or a clean install?

Did you run the Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor first?

Hi Felini,

this sounds like you may not have the Serial ATA setting set correctly in the BIOS. I’m unfamiliar with Toshiba’s BIOS options but you will be looking for one pertaining to ATA mode or Serial Mode. More than likely this setting needs to be changed as the laptop still thinks it’s in install mode. If ATA is selected switch to AHCI or vice versa.

Go into BIOS and disable ‘Restart on Error’. Then you should get a BSOD with an error code. Post back with the error code.

Thanks Schneider, Ryan, Joeperez for having the trouble of answering to this post.

– Yes this is a clean install in a old Toshiba Satellite 1900. – have done in recent model and works fine.

– No i didn’t run the Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor first.

– Cant do anything in the BIOS, just a few options, none related with ATA mode or even with AHCI, just informs that’s a HD from toshiba and the size and model.

– Same on “Restart on error”, doesnt have that option, its really basic the bios.

But i can tell you that before the first reboot, i can configure smoothly every option that i like in the desktop and folder views and so on..
After a reboot the windows starts loading and just when is about to open, a blue screen quickly appears and then restart itself.
i have installed the OS twice, and always the same problem.

If you are up to another installation before the first reboot:

1.) right click Computer
2.) select Properties
3.) click on Change Settings
4.) Click on the Advanced tab.
5.) Click Startup and Recovery Settings
6.) Uncheck “Automatically restart”
7.) Click Apply.

Record the information from the BSOD screen when you reboot and post it.

I don’t know if this is exatly pertinent but worth a try. I agree w/Ryan; it sounds like a HD config problem. I had similar experience when I changed my bios setting for the hard drive from IDE to AHCI. The following regedit fixed it and might be worth a try. Back up the registry before making the edit!

To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesMsahci
5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

Hi Felini, we need the specific model/serial number for your Tosh, 1900-xxx?

I’ve had a quick look on the Tosh site, the older models of the 1900 are not going to run 7 very well; Max. RAM from 512-1024MB, hdd 20-40GB 4,200RPM; desktop P4 CPU, no USB2. I think that even if you succeed in setting up 7 correctly it will run very slow and very hot if it is this type of specification.
