I’d like to get a peep out of my Windows 7 machine. Actually, I’d like something louder but I’d settle for a peep.

The problem has been created by my aquarium. Don’t worry. It didn’t leak over the computer. I have bright lights for aquatic plants which need to be turned on at 10:30 a.m, on at 12:30 p.m., off at 8:30 p.m., and off 10:30 p.m. These simulate the spectral patterns of tropical daylight. I’m proud to say I saved $60 by not buying the automatic controller for the lights in the knowledge that I could schedule a task in Win7. That works just fine and an alert window pops up four times a day to remind me to change the lights.

The only problem is it doesn’t pop up. It remains buried under any other windows I have opened so I tried to add sound to the scheduled task. I can start Windows Media Player from the scheduled task and make it play a .wav sound, but the /close parameter does not seem to be available in version 12. Also, I spend a lot of time listening to radio or music on Windows Media Player and it doesn’t handle double duty well.

Are there any other programs that can play a .wav sound and can be run from a command line?

My suggestion would be to see if you can find a Windows Gadget (right click on desktop and select from menu) that is a multiple event alarm clock that you can schedule.

There are some mail clients that also will allow you to set times and sounds to remind you of events. I know Mozilla Thunderbird has a built in Calendar app that allow you to set events that will give you visual as well as audio alerts at scheduled times. Windows Live Mail might have such a feature as well.
MS Office Outlook Calendar should work if you have Office installed.

I you do not have any of these already installed, I like Byron’s suggestion about a Windows Gadget. There must be one suitable for your use and would most likely be light on resources.
