Have recently moved from W98SE to Win2kPro.
Win2kPro install included IE5.0. Since I’ve been using IE5.5 for a year now and had no problems with it, I decided to install it from the cd.
The install ended up with 56 Bit encryption level (“Help =-> about”) and lists the link for the encryption upgrade. Obviously there isn’t an encryption upgrade for IE5.5 and the enc upg for 5.0 doesn’t work.
Some sites I regularly access require 128 Bit encryption level and I can’t get in to them.
What have I done? Color me confused?!?.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 14, 2001 at 7:33 pm #552095Hi Dick
I don’t seem to remember any restriction on upgrading from 56bit to 128bit, even in IE5.5. In any case my advice now would be to upgrade to IE6 without further delay. Get a Java VM (the MS one will do, version 5.0.3802) at the same time. IE6 is out on cover discs if you haven’t got a fast browser connection.Rgds

Thanks for the suggestions.
Downloaded and installed IE6 this morning via T1. Install successful — however, IE6 Help -> About … still shows “Cypher Strength 56 Bit”.
BTW … should I be in the IE forum instead of Win2k?
Have enjoyed your site and picked up some useful; stuff.
A light just went on … downloaded and installed TweakUI (for W2k)from your place very recently. I remember that Norton SW and TweakUI used to fight in 98SE. I have NSW2002 and TweakUI 2k installed.
Will try removing TweakUI2k and see if that may possibly have an effect. Thanks again …

AskWoody LoungerNovember 15, 2001 at 7:35 pm #552388Of course, you can download Win2k Ecryptin pack from http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/ default.asp
but I would reccomend install Service Pack 2 instead.
After Win2k SP2 installation, IE 5.5 SR2 will work at 128-bit strenght. -

Thanks for the suggestions and interest. Today after re-reading the messages in this string, I decided to download Win2k SP2 after reading how it “enables 128 bit encryption” on the Microsoft site.
I’m happy to inform you that SP2 downloaded and installed apparently without any problems … AND I NOW HAVE 128 BIT CYPHER STRENGTH.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
