(solved) win11 23H2 how set irfanview as default app for .jpeg?

I try but when I click on a jpeg I get photo or whatever it is.

Try in settings / set default app / enter a file type or link type – .jpeg, scroll down to infanview and choose it.

No change.

win11 is insisting that irfanview can’t do jpg,jpeg, etc , but of course it can.

After more searches, apparently MS has hardwired win 11 to open all images of that type with MS Photo, which you cannot remove. Yes, I can right click on it and choose open with, but that is a real pita.

Left click windows menu start icon (shows recent and other apps),
Left click the Photos icon and choose “app settings”,
Scroll down to Reset, click on repair, click on reset.

Voila.

Now you can right click on an image file, choose “open with”, click on “choose another app”, click on Irfanview (or whatever) and choose the “Always” button at the bottom. The Always button was missing before.

I personally didn’t have any problem changing it. YMMV!

yeah I wondered about that after I wrote it – definitely maybe only a few people will have to do that reset that thing!

There is no choice box at the bottom of win 11 forum posts like this:
