After fearful sweating if the v1809 updates would trash the machines, i updated to v1809.348 (is that correct terminology? build 17763.348) on a i7 laptop and desktop last week. I imaged backups before updating, though the installations went smoothly with no problems. Took about 90 minutes each.

After updating, all my documents and files are still there. Yea! Then i updated to new GeForce drivers in both machines and played a couple of games (Rainbow6 & Counterstrike) to see if anything there broke as had happened to some. Ran PCMark10 Basic and Furmark with the same good results as before the update. Ran Gibson’s InSpectre, and the patches for Spectre and Meltdown were still effective in these builds.

I imaged backups. But i’ve noticed that the System Restores i created before both the v1803 and v1809 updates, had been deleted, and the system restore functions were turned ‘Off’. Easy to turn back on, but has anyone noticed this too?

Overall smooth installs of v1809, been using for a week, no complaints.

I can understand this decision, using mixed versions of critical operation system files not a great idea as it could cause worse problems.

For a simplified example when Ubuntu applies a new Linux kernel update, all the new version’s key components are put in a new separate root disk image. Then the boot program’s (GRUB) configuration list is updated load to the newly created root disk so there is not mixing of the old and new parts.

(There is an advantage to this, old version still exists for a while; If the new kernel has a bad bug a person may be able to choose the previous version with the older parts that did not have the error.)

You’re already using the best protection, system images, in case of problems.

As for System Restore, I don’t use it.  However, after a version upgrade, the System Restore points would not function correctly (different system files between versions) so old Restore points are deleted to keep them from crashing the PC.  The rollback feature is available to return to the previous version, should that become necessary.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

I’m the same, I just don’t use System Restore at all in W10, I’ve disabled it in GP at initial set-up and only wish I could remove completely from my system.
I prefer to image the system although haven’t needed to re-image yet.

Thanks for the system restore info… i like it as ‘another option’ because its an easy way to go back if the machine hasn’t been really borked. Then the image backup if i have to  reinstall. i was just curious why the old system restores were deleted, because if the Windows update was unsuccessful, then i could roll back to the old Win OS version (windows.old).  That Linux-style of segregating .new from the .old  builds is good.

…still feeling my way around Win10, especially user account control. Different topic.

With W10 there are bound to be incompatibilities if restoring from a previous version which is why the restore points were deleted. Interesting point though, should you wish to roll back to a previous version or feature update, would these restore points re-appear?

I’ve always had SR points deleted with Version Upgrades and Build updates, probably because of the changes they brought.  SR was only saving one anyway, the one created just before the Upgrade or update finished.  There was a script floating around that let new points be created once a day but I’ve managed to lose the link to it.

i just read here and elsewhere a March 11th MS notice said that the upcoming Win10 v1903 will automatically uninstall broken updates, and automatically not try to download the ‘bad’ update for 30 days. I didn’t see a particular KB number. Hope it works

Finally, starting with version 1903, Windows 10 will be capable of removing updates automatically if your device can’t boot correctly after the installation. The new feature works automatically when none of the troubleshooting steps are able to fix the problem.

Also, after the update has been removed, you’ll receive a “We removed some recently installed updates to recover your device from a startup failure” notification, and the system will even block the problematic update from installing again automatically for the next 30 days, which should be enough time until the next patch releases with a fix for the issue.

That’s it, and a good read too. The auto-seclusion of Win10 updates that won’t work on a particular machine is more than handy and lowers my “apprehension index” when updating.

Other things in the new build…the new refined Settings App looks good, and the option to automatically fix scaling for apps that look blurry. A mod’d Action Center and Storage settings. The ability to delete some MS apps that come with Windows. A better Narrator to give my eyes a rest.

Added manual synchronization to the clock with the time server, like yesteryear. A “Pause update” for up to 35 days on Win10 Home is very nice. A new “Recommended troubleshooting” section to fix many critical problems automatically {Hmmm}. Other changes look to be mainly cosmetic and will be interesting to see.

-“Win10 v1903 is adding an acrylic effect.” That blur hurts my eyes already, will disable.-“The Start menu is debuting with a new simplified default layout.” WinAero and ClassicShell will fix that, for me.

Good, may everyone’s v1903 update go smoothly  🙂

I kept reading the lengthy update changes, and there are more good functions coming.
