      I haven’t been forced to the edge of the cliff with Windows 10 imposing itself on any of my Win7 systems, but I suggest that folks strongly consider avoiding any updates described as “Windows Client Update”. Those updates appear to have no security significance, but they do have other potentially unwanted side effects (one such August patch eliminated Windows Update notifications on five of my Windows 7 computers; those notifications were restored once the offending Windows Client Update patch was uninstalled).

      Given that Microsoft provides no useful description of recent “Windows Client Update” patches, it’s natural to infer that those updates benefit Microsoft without benefiting Windows users at all.

      What was the number of that update please? My notifications have evaporated as well.

      @CyGuy

      The article was referring to the message in Windows Update that locks on to “Install Windows 10” and doesn’t shake loose.

      I’ve read that there are about 10 of these Windows “Updates” that nag or push Win 10 on you. It sounds like you only got one.

      @Charlie

      The situation’s far more complex. For now, run GWX Control Panel to take care of the nags. I’ll try to tackle the snooping patches in a future InfoWorld post.

      Sorry, I didn’t make it clear I was directing my question to Marty.

      @CyGuy

      Yeah, another reason why we need a real forum here. Using @ tags is a pain….

      My bad too, I was intending to direct my comment to the original post from SteveA. I should have made that clear. Even in a forum you have to use a member’s forum name to direct a comment to a particular person. The Windows Secrets Lounge is like that.

      @Charlie

      That’s one of the many shortcomings of this particular forum program. I hope to get it replaced before too long.
