Yes, I tend to go where angels fear to tread. lol

Much slower to boot then Win8.1 for starters, but I suspect that’s because Win8.1 did some magical handwaving showing the tile windows first and you get distracted before finally going to your traditional windows desktop. lol

Now for the complaints. Had some major issues with Virtualbox. I did to a repair (and that required a reboot. 🙁 ) and that at least fixed my XP VM but my Win7 VM, I suspect, is hosed but I will wait for the updated Virtualbox to assess that (based on many complaints over at VB’s site not to mention Win10 is now reality, they will repair a lot of the issues soon enough). Time will tell. The bad news now is my XP VM sound no longer works. Haven’t tried to re-install the VB drivers again yet though (I’ll update this thread if that repairs the issue, but, as I suspect with my Win7 VM, it will take an updated VirtualBox to repair).

Office 2013 appears to work fine.

Photoshop CS5 launched (no additional tests done yet).

GIMP had to refresh the fonts (for GIMP users, you know how long that can take; lolol), but it launched too.

Still a lot more testing, but at least Win10 installed (took about an hour total).

    Some additional notes:

I left my computer on overnight; was hoping Win10 would be all loaded ready for the install and it was. Funny thing though is, at around 12:17am, apparently Windows tried to install Win10 without me but failed. Also, before installing Win10, I decided to un-install Classic Shell. May or may not have had to do so, but I figure, since Win10 gave you the startmenu back, I didn’t need Classic Shell. Well, I’m still thinking that I will put Classic Shell back on my system since I’m still not feeling the love for even the new startmenu. lol

    🙂

Well I did re-install the Guest additions. Still no sound. I guess I’ll wait until VB pushes a needed updated for Win10 compatibility. Still, I’m noticing something wonderful. My XP VM feels almost twice as fast as before. Not sure how that can be though. 🙂

      Additional update:

Win7 now works; strange. There was 2 pushed updates by Win10; might have fixed the issue (who really knows). Still, now that I’ve had more time to test, none of my VMs have sound (XP, Win7 or Ubuntu). I suspect it has to do with Virtualbox, but who even knows that. I did see the VB mixer and it wasn’t muted then. Again, strange behavior. Hope it all gets fixed soon. Glad Win7 works though. 🙂

Yet another observation if you will. When I first launch my VM (doesn’t matter which one), the sound mixer shows up in Win10. After a few minutes, it disappears. Not sure why this is so. The guest itself sees that it’s own sound is working. Any Virtualbox gurus here that may know what may be going on? 🙂

Arggghhh. Yet another Virtualbox Issue. I just got back. I usually put my PC in hibernate instead of turning off. When I woke it from hibernate, I got another VB error and it crashed the VM. I had to reboot the XP VM. I guess I will need to close by using VB’s built in hibernate before shutting my PC off (via hibernate that is). I sure do hope VB patches 5.0 already. 🙂

I do need to clarify something since I don’t want you folk to think I don’t like what I am seeing with Win10. Win10’s itself has pretty much been running flawlessly. Only issue is with VB and, based on other folks input too, VB should have patched the issues by now but haven’t, so, my beef is actually with Oracle. Working around the issues right now; use to doing that. I only used Edge for a few things; doesn’t appear to be a bad browser, but I have to use a sandboxed system. I do not trust any OS without virtualizing it. I don’t care how good the developers think their OS is, it has security flaws and the only (and I mean only) way to safeguard the OS is to sandbox it. I, again, will say, when I run my XP VM is feels even spiffier then with Win8.1. Not sure why that is, but I am happy with it. I did a GIMP edit recently too and GIMP runs perfectly fine win Win10 (even after waking from hibernate and leaving it running unlike VB). I also happen to like Cortana. Of course, I was a huge Clippy fan back in the day too. lol

Cortana is just a bit better then Clippy. Very pleased, by the way, that Office 2013, and even Photoshop worked flawlessly too. 🙂

I do have another annoying issue. My m705 Logitech mouse looses connection upon rebooting. It doesn’t happen all the time but often enough. I cannot simply remove batteries or turn power switch on mouse off then back on either to re-sinc. I have to physically unplug the unify receiver from the USB port and plug it back in. Hopefully these crazy little issues get resolved soon. I did email Logitech support about this issue and hopefully they will get back with me. 🙂

OK; I didn’t do anything but all of a sudden my XP VM’s sound is now working. Very strange. Even when I booted into my XP VM, I didn’t hear my startup sound. I wonder if somehow M$ was able to repair this issue without reboot? Still, that’s one issue resolved (well for now anyway). Now, hopefully waking up from Hibernate gets addressed shortly (again, doing so only makes Virtualbox go unstable and I have to re-boot the OS to get Virtualbox to work again). Still, I’m again happy I can hear my videos again. lol

      🙂

Edit: Couldn’t wait; checked hibernate and when I woke up, Virtualbox did not crash. Now I’m beyond stoked. lol

Thanks to whoever or whatever fixed Win10 for me. It can now only get better. Hopefully, my mouse will be fixed too (it’s been hit or miss). 🙂

    • #1518500

Spoke to soon; now after crash, no sound again in my XP VM. 🙁

      edit (8/1/2015):

Sounds back (but for how long? lol). Still, happy again for now. 🙂

      edit (8/1/2015):

Powered down then back up and no sound in the VM again. lol. Not sure why sound will all of the sudden work in my XP VM. Something bizarre’s going on. The only real solution, of course, will probably be a Virtualbox update. 🙂

      edit (still 8/1/2015):

Another observation. If I leave my computer on for over an hour, the XP VM’s sound all of a sudden shows up. Again, strange behavior. No way to explain. It is what it is. 🙂

Some good news. Looks like, after the Wednesday update, my mouse now continues to work after reboot. Pretty much knew this wasn’t a Logitech issue. Now if only Virtualbox instability will get fixed. Hopefully it will soon. 🙂

OK; again I go where angels fear to tread. I’m tired of the instability issues with Hibernate/sleep and Virtualbox. I could not find anywhere others experiencing this. Yes; found more then many people experiencing audio issues with VB. Decided to download the MB Drivers from my system’s (ASUS) site for Win10 and part of the installation was something called USB filter. Well, during the install, I lost my mouse and keyboard and waited a good while before the driver started to actually install this driver. It still wouldn’t go on to the next set of installs, so, after 40 minutes, I hard-key power downed. When I powered up, my system was still stable (thankyou God; lol). I then ran my VM and tested hibernate/wake up. No problem now (yippee). Then I tested sleep/wakeup. Still no problem (yippee). Drastic step for me but I did create a system recovery point before doing this, but if my system wouldn’t have rebooted, I would hope my recovery boot CD would have allowed me to recover, but sphewwwww; glad I didn’t have to do that. Still have no sound, so I believe that issue is with VirtualBox (funny; if I leave my VM on for a few hours, sometimes my VM sound will work). Happy I am now. Hopefully my system won’t crash when M$ updates next. lol

      🙂

    • #1521592

Maybe spoke a bit too soon. 🙁

Still, at least VB doesn’t crash Win10 anymore. I know what I have to do and still be able to hibernate/sleep without having to reboot. Still, I wish some entity would fix this. Not sure how installing the VGA/USB Driver from Asus made my system a bit more stable, but, it did. Hopefully it will get better when these bugs get addressed. Had several Watchdog timer resets before I did the VGA/USB thing, which, I assume, the report gets sent to M$ to see what can be optimized on their end. We shall see. 🙂

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag…ever try VMWare Player or do you have something a-gin’it?

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag…ever try VMWare Player or do you have something a-gin’it?

I use VMware Player, but I am resigned to the fact that not many others do.

    • #1521694

No need to un-install Classic Shell. Upon re-boot Classic Shell needs to refresh itself and does so automatically. Make sure you have the latest version of Classic Shell, maybe even the beta. Works great for me.

    • #1521859

Virtualbox is free; VMWare player is free but no XP VMs available for download (legally that is). 🙂

    • #1521867

OK; someone posted a work-a-round for the no sound in VM issue. Just tested this solution and it works. Better then what I was using (waiting for a few hours and praying my XP VM’s sound would magically show up; lol). 🙂

    • #1521871

Ya, I’m sure the number of current and future converted XP Mode VMs keeps the MS legal team up late at night. 😉

    • #1521875

Used my own XP which I paid, as I recall, $85 (OEM) for for my XP VM. I always prefer to do things legal. Still, as you said, I could probably find a VM XP appliance somewhere to use with the free VM Player (use to use VM Player when I was experimenting with Ubuntu many years ago when my host was actually XP; lol). Still, I like Virtualbox since I can actually install my own OS. 🙂

    • #1521953

All my VMs are VMWare Player installs of my own purchased OSes, though I did experiment with converting XP Mode to VMWare and also virtualizing a hardware install. The former always went swimmingly, the later was spotty, about 1 out of 4 times it was spot on.

I was just thinking since a Virtual PC install could be converted to either VB or VMWare install, there must be a way to convert from a VB install to a VMWare install, even if that means going back to an intermediary. Academic interest may compel me to try it someday…or at least I’ll research it a little!

    • #1521978

Maybe so, but not for free that I know of F.U.N. downtown. I like free. lol

Yes, you can export your VM in other forms that probably can be converted to VMWare. I also exported my VMs in a form that I can import should I need to start from scratch (well, my own one that concerns me is my Win98 VM since it was the most difficult to get right since there isn’t any true support for this very old OS). 🙂

    • #1521995

The player is awesome Prescott; you just can’t create VMs with it (unless that’s changed since 2009 (year I upgraded to Win7). 🙂

    • #1522074

Maybe that’s it, I’ve been using VMWare player since version 3.0.1 and I see the release date is Feb. 17, 2010 and the only thing I’ve ever had to do unconventionally to create a VM is Win 8 required the disk space to be allocated ahead of time before it would install.

    • #1522090

So you are saying you can install an OS using VMPlayer? 🙂

      • #1522225

So you are saying you can install an OS using VMPlayer? 🙂

VMware Player can run existing virtual appliances and create its own virtual machines (which require an operating system to be installed to be functional)

        🍻

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

    • #1522364

Interesting read wavy. Had no idea you can create your own XP VM using VMware_Player. You use to have to have an existing appliance to use the VMWare_Player. May try it again (still get the VMware emails since 2008 when I first installed it; haven’t used VMWare anything since 2009) if Virtualbox continues to be buggy. 🙂

    • #1522385

And it’s about time I went the other way; I originally compared them both back in 2010 I guess and VMWare Player won at that time.

    • #1522980

Definitely cool stuff and thanks for the screenshot Prescott. When I last used VMPlayer, you could only run a pre-created appliance. Looks like VMWare adopted the Virtualbox model which is a good thing.

As a side note, I did install the 10.0.1x beta which seems to be working fine (even in Hibernate and sleep modes) now. Oracle stated that 10.0.2x was still not compatible with Win10 so holding off installing it for now and sticking w/ the beta. Sound now works too without doing shenanigans. Pretty stoked. I figure things would start to work soon enough. Liking Win10 overall. Very quick boot. Not sure how to get Cortana to talk to me though; I don’t have a mic so type my request and get a good but silent answer. lol

      Oh well. 🙂
