Win10’s File Explorer can jump through hoops you likely didn’t know existed. From custom filters to manually modifying metadata, and many place in bet

Is it possible to have a selected details appear in sub folders? For example, to have “length” appear in all sub folders under “music”?

        I think this works:
+ Highlight the parent folder and make the changes you want.
+ Click on the “View” tab, choose Options/change folder and search options (Tools/Folder options in Win7)
+ In Folder Options, click on the “View” tab, be sure all the checks are in the right place, then click “Apply to all folders”
I think this will change the settings for the folder you highlighted and its subfolders (parent and child/children).

thank you for your reply, unfortunately did not work on all sub folders (win 10)

OK, I tried it on my 1809 (which probably means it applies to earlier versions as well).

I put pictures in several folders under “Pictures”
The default format is large icons – all were icons.
I highlighted the Pictures folder under my ID at the top (not C:\Users\<ID>)
I changed the format to “Details” with date, Size, type and Tags details.
I went to Folder Options>View, clicked “Apply to Folders,” clicked “Yes” and then OK.
All of the subfolders were changed to Details with the same columns.

I am using Open Shell (Classic Shell) to replace the horrible Windows Menu/tiles. That may be the difference.

This works, but selected subfolders are ignored it is an all or nothing change.

I tried your suggestion on my v1803 win 10. Worked on some folders and not others. Individual changes work just fine, just not able to reliably apply to nested sub folders.

I assume we are talking about Parent and Child folders in an actual file tree. Not “folders” which are really Windows Libraries.

Here’s one of my favourite little Windows Explorer tips.

If you go to View -> Navigation Pane -> Show All Folders, it’ll put your profile root folder and the Recycle Bin on the navigation pane.

Another thing to try, is the “single-click” mode.  It makes Windows Explorer behave more like a web browser, in that opening something takes one click instead of two.  Hovering for a second will select the thing under the cursor, then you can move elsewhere, hold shift, and everything in-between will be selected…. no clicking required.

It’s definitely not for everyone, but it’s worth experimenting with to see if maybe you like it more.

The trouble with single-click is that you can no longer hover on a folder, single click on it to highlight it, and save the double click for actually opening it or going to that location. For me, the distinction is important — for others maybe not so much.
