Your Win10 upgrade is scheduled for Saturday…

    2 choices to accept.

1 choice in small blue type in lower right corner “Do not schedule”, BESIDE WHICH WAS AN [OK].

If you think the [OK] is for the “Do not schedule”, you are WRONG.

You must click the “Do not schedule”.

The [OK] means that you accept the schduled Saturday update.

This TRICKERY is coercive and the FTC should brand this as misleading to the public. Any damage caused should be
the subject of a Class Action Lawsuit.

In my case the Nvidia drivers are not compatible with Win10 and an upgrade will fail.

That’s why we recommend GWX Control Panel, or GRC’s Never10. Then you don’t get the upgrade at all.

      cheers, Paul

Paul T: “why we recommend GWX Control Panel”
Does this replace the Windows 8.1 Control Panel or supplement it?
Are there any downsides to it, for example if at some future date you want to upgrade to Windows 10, will you have to install Win10 from the MS Website?

      Thank you,
      Paul

It supplements the Windows 8.1 Control Panel. It does one thing only: let’s you decide whether or not to get the Windows 10 upgrade.

More Good News! My STARTUP and SHUTDOWN times are now 10 secs or less. They had become longer and longer. Not sure if it was the GWX-CP or the Macrium Reflect (with “Verify File System” option checked), but I had run scannow about a month ago with no noticeable improvement). And I no longer see Win10 threats.

Thanks for all of your help. You guys are great.

The GWX Ultimate Outsider Control Panel is working very well. I DID have to turn off all updates because some were sneeking back in, but since I turned updates OFF in the GWX CP, they have stopped.

However, I was reading a Woody Leonard posting about all of this and he agreed with a poster that “you” might want to set your automatic updates to “Notify before install” instead of “Off”.

Should “Download but notify before install” option be selected in GWX-CP in order to be aware of available updates? Will I still be protected from Win10 while I explore options relative to my Dell nVidia drivers?

          Thanks,
          Paul

yes (or ‘notify and let me choose’ are both good practices) and yes … and actually the link provided by the somewhat unfairly maligned djohnson will help you do that. If you are not certain what video card chip came with your Dell (likely OEM) a program like Speccy or Belarc Advisor should ID it for you.

    • #1559097

No downside, you can turn off the protection anytime you want.

      cheers, Paul

It will also cleanup any of the Windows 10 crap already downloaded.

My advice: UPGRADE. Windows 10 is a beautiful thing.

My advice: UPGRADE. Windows 10 is a beautiful thing.

If you think that performing a major operating system upgrade without confirming the drive is without error, you have no viruses, Windows 7 or 8 is running without errors, Windows updates are current, and you have no image backup in your back pocket, be my guest, pilgrim.

I, too, like to live dangerously. But I’m not stupid.

And that’s the big problem with Microsoft doing coerced updates. You have no opportunity to confirm that your machine is really ready to upgrade. The only thing worse than a forced update is a badly aborted update. Microsoft is not infallible, as you can discover by reading this forum. They screw up on a regular basis.

Nothing wrong with Windows 10. I have upgraded about 75 machines, including all of my own machines, but I’ve been around long enough that you don’t make changes that drastic without doing your homework first.

      Good news!

I refreshed the (free) Macrium Reflect and ran it Friday night.

Then I downloaded and ran the GWX Control Panel

      and….THEY were “Beautiful Things”.

The MS Saturday Win10 THREAT came and went without a Win10 Upgrade.

Thanks for all the helpful comments and to Josh Mayfield for his well-executed GWX CP coding.

It truly is a “beautiful thing” when you can decide for yourself what OS you want on your computer.

It truly is not a “beautiful thing” when an OS upgrade is forced on you without your consent or ability to decline the upgrade.

Perhaps upgrading your drivers BEFORE you install would help. Nvidia has driver updates on a regular basis.

You just don’t get it. Quit posting this drivel. You’ve done nothing to determine the model of video card. It is vey well know that there are many NVidia cards which are not compatible with Win10 and NVidia is not going to do anything to make them work.

Many of us who run Win10 like it very much but will not blindly recommend an upgrade. Do everyone a favor by trying to find out more information before making suggestions.

Thank you. I will try either The ‘notify and let me choose’ or ‘download but notify’ option.
I found the windows log and from the notes listed there, the “MS Win10 attack robot” continue to be trying to do something and has scheduled a date to try again!

Re: Dell NVidia drivers. My Dell is 2 years old. I have an extended DELL service contract. From my invoice I know the video card model number and so far, no driver is available. I use a CAD software program, a video editing program and photo editing programs, all of which rely on a high performance video card – which is my NVidia. If Win10 forces an update, I’m out of business ! My only choice then would be to buy and install another video card, retune my monitor for color correctness and start over. That will entail weeks of lost time and money.

I was going to switch to Apple, but decided to stay with what HAD been working.

What is your video card model number? I assume it is a workstation card?

Unless either of those 3 apps uses the parallel processing power of a graphics card (in which case it is proprietary) the only use of a video card in CAD or video editing in commercial packages in lessening the load on the CPU is in realtime playback. Almost any modern consumer or workstation card can handle that. Some faster workstation GPUs (drivers really) can make a small but noticeable visual playback difference).

Virtually all of the load of rendering is borne by the CPU which is why the more cores the better, with support for hyperthreading and 64bit processing and apps to do as much as possible in RAM. Which is why Xeons are a better chocie than i7’s. That may change in the future because I think both CAD and video editing are ripe for parallel processing, but so far years later nobody seems to have gotten around to writing the code for commercial distribution.

Color correction adjustments are a pain but should not take more than a few hours of time. Learning to do everything you do on an Apple–a viable option–would take weeks of your time. And repurchasing suitable apps.

Run GWX Control Panel or GRC’s Never10 and Windows will never upgrade.
