Forgive me for asking do updates get theyre own Chapter? 🙂

    • #32511

YAY!!!! Awwwright!!!! ( confetti flying )

I can rest my jaws from bit chomping.
This book, like Woody’s Win XP book is going to be extremely helpful even though I have been on Win 10 for a little over a year, I need all the help to keep 2 systems running smoothly.

      Thank you Woody!

    • #32512

It’s available in the UK through Amazon on the 25th October apparently, at £25 for the paperback edition (with free delivery).

    • #32513

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more…

      CONGRATS, Woody!

    • #32514

      🙂

    • #32515

There’s a section for people who are installing the Anniversary Update for the first time – so it’s kind of a “this is what’s changed” section.

    • #32516

      HA!

Back when I lived in Thailand, I had a bag printed –

Once more unto the beach, dear friends!
      Once more.

I called it the “Bard bag.”

    • #32517

Congratulations! A book is hard work.

    • #32518

      Well done Woody! 🙂

    • #32519

Uhm, “furshlugginer?” I like to think you mean that in the broadest sense of the word/concept.

If I had the intent, interest, and energy to go down the WinTen rabbit hole, I would buy your book Woody. I’ve bought a few of your earlier Win books in the last 20 years.

Congrats, and keep up the good work. Many more people than you know depend on what you do.

      Jim

      SO?
      ARE YOU …..
      An W10 ENABLER
      OR
      A W10 SYMPATHIZER ?

      HA HA 😀

cant resist the propaganda script…. well if the ptb does not like what be interpreted in their brain, no amount of explanation or reasoning will save the head. Sadly its still the common story of humanity, even after these many thousands of years of “civilisation”

Im sure you do good honest work… thought you understand its not my taste… I wish you well woody

HOPE it sells well too 🙂 good luck

Actually, I’ve been using Win10 daily since the first beta releases, and switched my main machine over to Win10 shortly after it was released a year ago.

I like Win10, but people who are going with Win10 need to understand its limitations, and its baggage.

    • #32522

      Gack! I mis-spelled it! 🙂

    • #32523

As you know, I used Windows 10 from the early days until few months ago. I used the frequent betas as production with all their quirks and I didn’t lose any data, but I wasted huge amounts of time with the upgrades.
My main objections for which I rolled back are:
      – User Access Control enforced as otherwise none of the Universal Apps would work. This is not something new as it was around since Windows 8
      – Good desktop applications (e.g. Calculator) replaced with inferior Universal Apps
      – Compatibility issues with few older applications, not so many though
      – Frequent crashes of the built-in Universal Apps
Telemetry was the last of my concerns as there are many other more powerful ways in which data can be collected for surveillance purpose. If anything, I don’t like the network traffic generated by telemetry, which has as net effect lowering the overall performance of the machine.
The main issues are not new, they are well known from Windows 8/8.1. I think there is more work to be done in particular to address stability issues to make Windows 10 a worthy competitor with its relatively stable predecessor Windows 8.1.

I’ve simply kept the old calc.exe & en-us/calc.exe.mui because didn’t like the new UWP version either. Besides that I’m still running the clock.exe (2/22/1999) from Windows NT. I would dump the entire UWP subsystem if I could.

Recently overall numbers for Windows 7 versus Windows 10 usage have been more than double, but that’s worldwide. Apparently Windows 10 has been beating out Windows 7 recently in Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Portugal, Sweden, and Finland. See http://gs.statcounter.com/#desktop-os-ww-monthly-201608-201610-map. Also, the numbers are fairly close in the US, Mexico, western EU countries and Japan.

I bought your first W10 book and am about to order this new one from Amazon due to the AU additions. I don’t yet have a W10 computer, but sooner or later W10 will be inevitable. In the meantime, I’ve found that much of the material is useful even for W8.1 and Win7.

Now, back to my foxhole to await the carnage of October’s patch Tuesday!

    • #32526

Great news! Wishing you much success with the new book!

    • #32527

Soon to follow, the shadow 2nd Volume, kept under the bookstore counter/wrapped in brown paper:

      _Windows 10 for Smarties_

      chapter 1: Win 7, Group W
      chapter 2: Win 7, Group B
      chapter 3: Chromebook
      chapter 4: Apple
      chapter 5: Linux
      chapter 6: paper/pencil+abacus
      etc.

      😉

    • #32528

      GREAT!
Have had a copy on order w/ Amazon for 2 months! Question: Is a searchable PDF of the book available? With Win10 that would be VERY convenient . . .

    • #32529

Alas, no. There’s a Kindle version, though.

    • #32530

      Woody:
Please let us know if you will be at any upcoming conferences, conventions, events, etc for book signings!

    • #32531

You know what i was forgetting my manners “congrats on the new publication!” You know what Chrtistams aint here yet so give us snippets of the book when, say, theres gaps between the “cummlative calamitys”. You know wet our appetites. There has to be stuff in there even for “Grizzled old Windoze survivors.” On a personal note i would rather have a book i can get my teeth in to rather than the usual socks and Whiskey on xmas day (well the socks anyhow) Yoll be probably too busy on book signing engagments, film rights and scoping out beach front property in Siam. So once again many congrats. and i hope its a success 🙂

    • #32532

🙂 I’ll definitely buy when I finally have to make the move to 10, thanks Woody!

    • #32533

I’m thinking Robert Downey Jr as Woody….

    • #32534

I’m seriously thinking about coming up with a label that folks can print…

    • #32535

I’ve seen the drawing of you up top on this site, and the photo (with the thatched roof in the distance) on InfoWorld, but I wasn’t quite getting a Robert Downey Jr sort of vibe 😉 so I thought I’d ask a search engine to see if there were any other photos of you out there.

Since I avoid Google, the image search isn’t great on Startpage/Ixquick, but it returned a number of your book covers, several of that little cartoon guy with the triangular head who is on the “Dummies” book covers, one of the drawing of you on a granola bar, one of a mustachio’d fellow in a green shirt pointing into the innards of a computer (apparently from your google plus profile), one of a cartoon from this site ( https://www.askwoody.com/tag/cartoon-win8-win9-sinofsky-myerson-woody-leonhard-sethness-seth-bareiss/ ).

Therefore, I’d lean more towards Liam Neeson (example: http://www.irishmirror.ie/showbiz/celebrity-news/liam-neeson-finally-sets-record-7353583 ).

    • #32536

Folks are asking because they would want to meet you and shake your hand, to say “Hey Woody, I’m Joe Shmoe, I’m a participant on AskWoody, and I have really benefitted from your guidance there”, not because they want a facsimile of your signature! 🙂

    • #32537

Appreciate your sentiment! But I don’t travel for business any more. Gave up on it about 20 years ago, when I figured out it’s more efficient to get everybody together in a virtual room. Granted, the coffee (and the beer) isn’t as good….

    • #32538

      Liam Neeson would be perfect!

I know a guy who insists I sound just like Neeson.

    • #32539

guess you didnt like SUPERman and putin…

      if so sorry about that…

      been reading alot about destiny…
guess what will be… will be… as it was
just not filter through and registered by the sense perception of the (lower?) creature yet (in time (and not outside of time))
of then what we are told called “history”
of which we never learn anything from
of which what is the real reality examinied and tested
of we collectively reject and prefer not

good luck again on the sales
it seems you do great work here
and you enjoy the fruits of your labour
the definition of – a lucky man

      again pls continue feel free
to reject all my 2cent post in the future
its nothing important – really 🙂

      peace2u woody

    • #32540

Would that there were many fruits to this labor! I figure if I’m lucky, the book will compensate me at about minimum wage level.

    • #32541

      Oh my ???
thought you be one of those million-book best seller
      since …
      well….
didnt MS say they hv 400 million user or smth?

1% of that and buy your book would be good enough for retirement….

      I would think 🙂

avg is 10-20% for minimum marketing/sales

      well someone once said
“Life and dream are different pages of the same book”

      the book is called “destiny”
      – Life = reality-bites = waking up
      – Dream = candy-crunch (or rush) = back to snooze

well… still I hope you enjoy the process…
and happiness from whatever you enjoy
      that too is priceless!
that too is a lucky man 🙂

      peace2u

    • #32542

Well… I think the title sez it all!

    • #32543

      🙂

    • #32544

      Woody,

I’m not a Win 10 user – but I read all of your posts anyways. Here’s an interesting article from Ian Paul which describes a utility that I’ve never heard of before.
“How to stop failing Windows Updates from bothering you”

      http://www.pcworld.com/article/3128097/windows/how-to-stop-failing-windows-updates-from-bothering-you.html

      Enjoy.

Last night I happened to look at the Staples website to see if they had something locally that a neighbor was looking for,
and after I did that and while I was on the phone with them, I idly typed in other entries in the Staples search box to see what would come up.

I typed in your name to see if our local Staples carried your new Windows book, and I saw that they carry a number of your books (for online sales),
but your first edition Windows 10 says “out of stock”,
and they do not have a listing for your second edition of Windows 10 —

So, the Dummies people (whoever handles stocking the big retailers) might want to liaise with Staples and get a listing up of your second edition, and take down the listing of your first edition which says “out of stock”, since it’s not relevant anymore.

The Dummies person (or whomever) may also want to get them to clean up some of their other listings for your other books on the Staples site – I didn’t look closely at those, but some of them might be for editions that are now superceded/out of print.

    • #32546

      Thanks for the heads up!

    • #32547
