• WIN XP Restore Points will not restore

I am working thru a connectivity problem in another place, but I thought to ask this one here:

Upon discovering I could not connect because of a program corruption (as I suspect) I thought to go back to a previously know good point and simply do a system restore.

The error date was 7/10/2011 so I chose 7/8/2011, 7/4/2011, 7/01/2011, and so forth, allowing two or three days for each iteration. None of these would restore.

I kept getting “Windows is unable to restore this dumb-(censored) computer to the state it was before you kicked it in the head. Go away, ‘cos nothing has been done to the computer.”

Well, not really, but you get the idea.

Now: If the program WON’T reset the computer to a “previously know operating state” (and it was working quite nicely on ALL those dates), then what’s to good of it?

    Am I doing something wrong?

Feel free to reply, but I’ll not be able to see the posts until tomorrow about 1600GMT (or if I get the poblem solved, of which I have small hope) and will reply then.

    Thanks for your consideration.

Now, to whom do I complain about VBulletin?

Have you disabled your anti-virus solution before starting the restore?

Have you tried the restore in safe mode?

If, an Anti-Malware (AV) program did a scan and found viruses, etc., embedded in those old restore points, taking out the viruses could corrupt the restore points. I think In that case, I’d get rid of the old restore points and force a new one.
One way to get rid of the old restore points is to shut off System Restore for that drive (C: ) and reboot. The old restore points will be gone.
Then after the reboot, turn System Restore back on for that drive.

      Good Luck,
      😎

There are several thins that can cause System Restore to stop working (either stop making restore points,or be able to restore from them).Something many people don’t realize is that if you disable the Task Scheduler service,System Restore won’t create restore points. To start it up,click Start| Run and type services.msc and then click on OK.Scroll down to “Task Scheduler” in the left column (Name). If the service staus isn’t “Started,” right click and select Start. Also be sure the Startup Type is set “Automatic.”
Another problem that can mess up System Restore is low disk space. The service needs at least 1 to 2 GB free on the partition where Windows is installed in order to make restore points. If it doesn’t have that, free up some space (delete or move files).
