A few months ago Win Update disappeared from the Notification Area. Before that it would pop up a notification when new updates were in Win Update. Now I have to “manually” check Win Update for 2nd Tuesday releases. I can’t find a setting to restore that notification in either the Notification Area or Win Update itself. I have Update set to “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download them and install them” Anyone else notice this and/or have a solution?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 11, 2015 at 8:02 am #1527856I too have just started to have this problem with win7 and tried the suggestion by Sudo15 with no luck. There is only one icon for Windows Update but this has the “Windows installed new updates” below it. There is no other Windows Update icon to customize. I only realized when no notifications came down for the September updates and manually checked through the control panel for updates and received them from there. Normally I only select a few for installing and the icon in the tray stays there, letting me know some more are being offered. Icon is no longer there. This means I have to do a daily check manually to see if new updates are available such as defender outwith patch tuesday. Any help appreciated. Thanks

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 12, 2015 at 9:23 am #1528034I do not have KB3065987 installed and never been offered this from Microsoft. However I did have KB3075851 and un-installed this patch which has resolved the icon and notification problem. I then checked for updates expecting the KB3075851 patch to be re-offered but it was not. There was another patch KB2991963 offered outwith patch Tuesday and this was not mentioned in Windows Secrets newsletter along with KB3083992, KB3086255, KB3077715 & KB3083324 which I have held back until further advice. Worth having a look at http://tinyurl.com/oodqwdd
Has anyone had any problems with the above patches and can they be safely installed?
Cheers

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 12, 2015 at 10:59 am #1528045I have KB3075851 installed because it’s related to KB3065987 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3075851
Thanks for the tip on 3075851 – it’s my other laptop that didn’t get the notification – it was N/A on this one for this month, as I did a manual check for updates to gee up this month’s as I don’t normally get them until late Wednesdays.
Couldn’t find any useful info on KB2991963 and while Google links are dated for Nov. 2014, its install date on mine is 10th June this year, although I have factory reset this machine a number of times recently.
KB30839922 installed 9th Sept and KB3077715 22nd June – no problems that I know of and I’ve hidden KBs3086255 and 3083324 by choice.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 12, 2015 at 11:50 am #1528066Given Rosa’s find that installing KB3092627 resolved her notification problem, I may reinstate that from Hidden and install that to see if my notification returns – which must have been taken out by a previous update.
It looks like it’s taking Patches to patch previous Patches – again

I am sorry, Sudo15. I thought that 3092627 had brought my Windows Update notifications back, but it didn’t. Currently, I have the notifications working just fine on my computer (Windows 7 Professional SP1, 64-bit). What I did is uninstall Windows Updates 3065987 and 3075851. That’s all I did, I think, to restore my notifications. Neither of the two updates which I uninstalled are being re-offered to me by Microsoft.
All “important” Windows updates are now installed on my system except for 3083324. That one also deals with the Windows Update Client. I’m planning on waiting a while before installing it. I’d like to hear what other people think of it.
