Apologies in advance for this somewhat garbled and lengthy post:
I got this new pc with Win/Ofc XP on Sunday which as yet I’m not enjoying . I would be grateful for any help, guidance/info on any one of the issues below. So here they are:
(1) any action I undertake presents me with a dialogue box re speech recognition – I removed the check mark under Tools to disable this feature but it keeps returning;
(2) I’ve turned off the speakers in an effort to kill off a radio station which

AskWoody LoungerJuly 5, 2002 at 11:25 pm #599288Thanks very much Dave. I’ve just sent an e-mail to the person I bought it from. I appreciate the advice – I have tried pretty much everything including searching the MS KB to no avail. Will post back results. I can always hook up the old 6GIG HD and poke along with Win98 as an interim measure. Woe is me!

AskWoody LoungerJuly 10, 2002 at 4:15 am #600163Dave A, debbieb, Leif, MerC and WylyWyly: Bottom line: no resolution on voice/speech recognition and the radio station and buzz/hum from the speakers play on … And like you, debbieb “The only place I find it is under tools and you can click it on and off, but the change doesn’t stay put. If you reboot, or change applications, ie: Word to Excell or Access, the prompt appears again.” Debbie this may help you somewhat: I’m told that this is turned on by default when installing – no choice – it’s a “feature” so uninstall this feature if you can.
The chap I bought the pc from picked it up this evening (6pm July 9th Toronto time) and will uninstall and reinstall to see if that fixes it. He thinks the speakers may be faulty and that my panicware (popup ad stopper) may be the culprit with respect to java not being supported in WinXP (i.e. grid lines not appearing here at the Lounge) and I thought that might be the case also until I remembered I’m using the same popup ad stopper on this – my old pc (Win98, Ofc97 pro) with no problems at all. We’ll see.
It’s very upsetting to wait almost a year before deciding to buy a pc on my soon-to-self-implode-line-of-credit and then have this grief. I will post back with results.
Thank you all very much – you are the best and I’m grateful for your responses. It eases my angst somewhat to have you guys to ‘talk’ to.I complained that I had no shoes

AskWoody LoungerJuly 15, 2002 at 2:12 am #601109Thanks for that Dave. I sent your answer off to the rep of pc co as soon as I rec’d it and just today got the pc back with Windows XP & Office XP reinstalled. Haven’t had much chance to check out the pc and will repost later BUT it would seem that was right on the money and he downloaded the necessary! So far I have just set up my ISP stuff, looking to get the rest of my favorites imported, speakers seem ok, etc.. I will need to do use it for a few days but so far the only problem I see is with Outlook

AskWoody LoungerJuly 10, 2002 at 4:06 pm #600333I may be off – since I am doing this from memory and not near my XP/Office XP system (dang), but you might be able to kill it if you going into Accessories – System Tools – System Info – and go to startup and kill – ctrmon.exe. I know it has something to do with the speech/language system. I just can’t remember what.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 16, 2002 at 12:57 am #601379So now I can see the gridlines here at the Lounge. But at this site and all others I visit no images are shown. If I right click and choose ‘show picture’ it happens but only for that one image! Same for the folders that are either red or yellow – must right click to ‘show picture’ and that only works the one I choose. Can anyone help?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 16, 2002 at 2:17 am #601389Thanks so very much – getting this new pc has been more stressful than the 4-6 times attempts booting up the old beastie. That’s done it. Can I impose on you for one more puzzle. In posting this I wanted to insert a smilie but when I click on ‘smilies’ nothing happens. I checked ‘always expand ALT text for images’ just in case that was at issue but still no smilies. Another thing I did notice is that the images are very slow to load. Any thoughts – especially with the Smilies?
