Win Defender Definition updates not downloading

Within the last week or so, Win Defender Definition Updates are refusing to download. Clicking the Download button in Win Update produces no activity. Even turning off Metered Connection doesn’t help.

Try manually downloading them.

In the Windows Defender Security Center, in Virus & Threat Protection, there’s a ‘Check for Updates’ button.

PS Did you turn off Windows automatic updates? That would cause WinDef not to update.

Note also that you can try manually downloading Definition updates for Windows Defender Antivirus and other Microsoft antimalware at this website:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions

If there is a problem with Microsoft servers, just try again later, or tomorrow.

Thanks for these two responses. I was able to manually download and install the definition update that was “stuck” by going through Defender.  I’ll try to remember to do that if needed in the future. Yes, I have automatic updates turned off as recommended by Woody. I check wushowhide daily to see if there is anything offered that is safe to install. This is usually Defender Definitions and MSRT updates. I don’t hide these and they usually appear, download and install with no problems when I run Windows Update. This process worked fine on today’s Definition update. Have not tried the other website mentioned since the Defender method worked.
