Win 8.1, local accounts and the App Store

Hi

Have just upgraded son’s Win8 laptop to Win8.1.
Followed all the advice to keep the (sole) local login, and everything works OK.

Only trouble is, he now can’t get at apps he wants. The Facebook app, for example – Windows is insisting that he log in with his Microsoft Account (he does have one, it’s on Skype), and the only options that I can easily see appear to be ones that will permanently convert him to an MS account. Something we went out of our way to avoid in the first place!

There should be an option somewhere that says something like:
Sign in to each app individually (not recommended)
I don’t remember the exact wording. You then have to supply a Microsoft Account each time you use the store to get a new app.

Thanks. I saw that, but thought that it was asking for the Microsoft Account every time he wanted to run the app.

Just curious: If the reason you avoided the Microsoft account was to enhance your privacy (you did say that you went out of your way to avoid a Microsoft account), do you really want to install the Facebook app? As I understand it, it would integrate your Facebook experience into Windows 8.1, which would seem to go counter to your desire for enhanced privacy.

I agree, Facebook is so much more intrusive and insecure than signing in with my MS account. People just don’t realize how much info Facebook has on their subscribers.

It was partly that, but also because everything had already been set up on his local account and I had read various stories about issues when converting a local account to an MS Account.

The FB app wasn’t my idea, you understand. But I’m his IT consultant rather than his “preventer of IT services”

If he already has an MSN account on Skype, that should suffice as his/her login to the Windows 8 store?
