Win 7 will not recognize PNP monitor

I have a Gateway desktop computer which came with VISTA 64 bit installed. When Win 7 came out, I did an upgrade (not a clean install) and everything seemed to go quite well. Then, I started using an AOC V22+ monitor which Win 7 would only occasionally recognize. If I looked at the devices section in the Control Panel, it showed that I was using a generic non-PNP monitor. I wondered if this was the result of updating rather than doing a clean install; so, I decided to save all of my working files and do a clean reinstall. It took many hours of effort and everything worked perfectly as I built my system back up. Near the end of the process, I reinstalled my copy of Photoshop Elements 7 (which was released before Win 7). When I completed the installation and did the obligatory restart, the computer would no longer recognize the AOC monitor. I uninstalled PSE7, but the damage was done — the computer still does not recognize the monitor.

Is there any way to correct this problem short of restarting the clean install process and then loading a current version of Photoshop Elements?

Did you download and install the Win7 drivers which could be available for your monitor. Hopefully they will be 64 bit and fix the problem. If you have already done this I would suggest looking at an alternative photo editing program like Zoner Photo Studio 12. There is a free version and I use it. It seems to be far more capable than I require.for my photo editing. Perhaps the PSE7 screws with the Color Management sufficiently to cause your problem. I cannot say for certain. Hope this helps.

After I clean installed Win 7, Microsoft offered up a boatload of updates and among them was a driver for my monitor which I allowed to be installed. It really does appear that PSE7 messed with the operating system. I just hope there may be a way of fixing it without starting over with the clean install.

Do not trust the driver Windows Update passed along to you. Uninstall that driver and get the latest driver from the Manufacturer.

Hi Llyn,

Try doing a System Restore using a restore point prior to installing PSE7. In Windows 7, System Restore will restore your registry settings to the way they were before the PSE7 install. It will not uninstall PSE7 but it may reverse the Registry damage done by PSE7. You can then uninstall or just remove all traces of PSE7 from your hard drive.

Did you check to see if PSE7 was Windows 7 compatible? Check the Compatibility Center here.

And as phasr suggested, check for Win7 drivers for your LCD.

If the system restore does not work perhaps a repair installation would do the trick. I tried Photoshop Elements on my PC as well quite a while ago. It was a no go. The app worked fine with my daughter’s 32 Bit Win 7 OS but would not work on my 64 Bit OS. Do not recall the symptoms at this time. Once you get the system set up the way you want it, use an imaging app to create an image. This would allow you to be back up and running in less than 1/2 hour. Much better than the time it’s taken so far and continues to take. Check some of the options available in the Security and Backups forum.

Thanks for reminding me about going back to restore points. Sadly, that was not the answer. I looked at the compatibility page you referenced and it said “no information available,” sigh … I have downloaded the drivers from the AOC site. Sadly, the computer can only see a “Non-PnP generic monitor and does not therefore call for me to offer it the AOC driver software.

Have you still tried to install the AOC drivers manually? Windows will normally decide what drivers to assign LCD drivers on its own, and they may not be correct, as in your case. Got to System>Device Manager>expand Monitors>right click on Non-PNP generic monitor driver and select Properties>click on Driver tab>click Update Driver button>select Browse my computer for driver software to manually install the driver.

See if you the driver will install and be acknowledged by your Windows installation.

A strange thing happened on the way to sorting this problem out. When I shut my computer down last night, I got a dialog box asking that I not kill the power so that Win7 could install updates. (I had lost a number of updates when I went back to the earlier restore point and it appears that, once you give Win7 permission to load an update, it will just keep trying until it succeeds). At any rate, when I booted up this morning, the computer realized that I was connected to an AOC V22+ monitor and was running as it ought to! Go figure …

So, I’ll just use my computer as it is until I can follow Ted’s advice and make a disc image before loading any other software.

Glad to hear your problem has been fixed! Maybe one of the updates that were killed by the System Restore operation was corrupted, and things went better the second time it came down the pike.
