Hi, wishing to do an upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Win 7 Home premium. Get message that I must uninstall Avira Antivirus first. Have done that. Cleaned the regisrty (i hope) of all keys pertaining to Avira. Searched the “net” for answers, none have worked. This smart group should have an answer for me. Thanks. Jim

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 19, 2011 at 5:47 pm #1263588Laserjim, welcome to the Lounge.
Instead of an upgrade, do a custom install over the Vista partition. This will format the partition and create a folder in the C Drive called windows.old. This folder contains the entire Vista OS. You can open this folder and drag data to the appropriate areas of Win 7 (data, contacts, favorites, links, etc.)
I have heard and read of many more problems with an upgrade install than with the custom install.
Also, please use smaller font. This almost seems as though you are yelling.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 19, 2011 at 6:31 pm #1263590I too would heartily recommend clean install as opposed to upgrade. I did it and it took about an hour over a year or so ago and I’ve had no issues whatsoever. I bought the Toshiba Vista laptop and within a week did a clean install. If you do decide to go this route, remember that patience is a BIG virtue in this endeavor. Sometimes you might think the machine is just sitting there and you might be tempted to close or turn it off or interfere with it, but generally let it run and do its thing. If you need more instructions on how to go about doing a clean install, just post and we are always happy to walk you through it.
BTW, Welcome from Gaylord, MI. I’m a neighbor South of the border lol

laserjim,
Hello…You can try to find the “leftovers” with this program (free) http://www.voidtools.com/ Download and install …then configure to only scan the drive you want EX: C: Then input Avira… click on all that it finds and delete… you will be surprised at how much will be left. You can also try this free program also (i use both) http://www.mythicsoft.com/register_ar.aspx Agent Ransack 2010 both are great programs to find leftovers. Regards Fred -

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 19, 2011 at 6:41 pm #1263592I know alot of us use Revouninstaller to find those extra remnants of programs left after an uninstall. You only need the FREE version and when you open it, it will show you a list of programs on your computer. You find Avira and click on it and choose uninstall and check the “Moderate” setting. That way, you are finding the remnants left as opposed to the normal files deleted from the default uninstaller. It will continue to scan your computer so don’t click RESTART, just keep clicking “next” and ONLY delete those items marked in BOLD. It usually asks you if you want to create a restore point as well.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 19, 2011 at 7:12 pm #1263596Sometimes I’ve gone ahead and reinstalled the program just so I could uninstall it properly
I know prior to using Revo, that I had alot of remnants left, so I re-installed the programs and then uninstalled them. If it were me, I’d reinstall Avira and get rid of it properly, or use your programs you mentioned
Thanks Fred, Revo Pro provides a forced uninstall for programs already uninstalled on your ‘puter. Here is a link for a 30 day trial version. That would be plenty of time to try it out. I don’t know anyone who uses the two programs you mentioned, but I do know many who use this one. I will check out the ones you mentioned

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 20, 2011 at 7:19 am #1263643For what it’s worth: Whenever I have a problem removing a program entirely, my first approach has been to reinstall it, then use Revouninstaller as has been mentioned above. Then I go into Safe Mode with Networking
and use Revo there to uninstall it. So far, I’ve not had any issues that couldn’t be resolved this way. I will be interested to see which approach laserjim uses and which will ultimately work.
