I have been using windows 10 pro (preloaded) on new HP for 2 years. Had NO intention of going to Win 11 for now. I had changed to 22H2 to limit my system to only allow Win 10 updates. However, windows updates auto downloads and installs with no opportunity to vet what’s coming. As a consequence, I have inherited “Win 11 insider preview” because I feel it was disguised as an “update” of Win 10. I think this is far worse than straight Win 11 upgrade because it is very difficult to remove or wind back .

All of the online suggestions (including Microsoft’s) of how to undo this refer to tabs and settings that no longer appear on my system, eg there is no longer a “security and updates” as such and yet, it is constantly referred to. Moreover, of the possible available commands to try and do this, most are greyed out.

I have paused updates for 7 days to buy some time to try and work out how to get back from Win 11 insider preview to Win 10 pro. Believe me, it is quite convoluted.
In the interim, my Express VPN has all but stopped making it unusable and you cannot actually talk to a technician at Microsoft.

Has anyone beaten this problem or have any suggestions ?? Would love to hear.
    thanks

Are you sure you didn’t opt in to insider edition accidentally?  As Microsoft offers up insider if you’ve turned on insider.

Give me a screen shot of what you have?

We suggest GRC InControl to limit Windows upgrades and WUmgr to vet/install updates.
We also suggest making a full image backup before updating, then you can restore without issue.

You normally have about 10 days to revert an upgrade. If you are outside this window you may need to reinstall W10.

Try this to see if the options are available.
      Win R, control, Enter
This will bring up Control Panel.
From there, click on System and Security > Security and Maintenance.
You should see a Recovery icon as the last option. Click it.

      cheers, Paul

thanks susan, I have seen that article but it deals with going back from windows 11 – not Win11 insider preview which behaves unlike other normal OSs

Thanks Paul. you are spot on. All the old familiar win 10 panels and options seem to be there and available. It is the first time I have seen them since the insider program loaded. Will try it tomorrow when I have more time

thanls to both of you again

If you actually have a Windows 11 insider build installed and are outside of the window to revert, you must do a clean install to go back to a prior version.

AFAIK, an insider preview build is never installed until you opt-in to the insider program.

Also, if the PC is registered in the insider program you must leave the insider program. Otherwise, you will continue to get insider builds.
