I have notepad pinned to my taskbar. If I paste something into it, and then later close it by clicking the top right X, I would expect it to ask if I want to save it. Instead it closes the window, but the info is still in there – if I click on the icon in the taskbar it just pops up with the info in it.

How do I clear and close it?

You could try resetting notepad to its default settings. Probably won’t help, but won’t hurt either.

Thanks! I reset by left clicking the start icon, right clicking the notepad icon and choosing App settings, and going down to Reset and clicking on both of them. Next time I started Notepad I get this!

        So! It is quite intentional!
Then I found that clicking File and Close Tab gives the choice I was looking for: “save or don’t save”, which is the solution! Thanks for the prod!

The new default in Windows 11 Notepad is to restore previously opened files when next opened. If you want to revert to traditional behaviour, go to Notepad Settings (cog at top right) and change When Notepad starts from “Open content from the previous session” to “Open a new window”. Then, closing notepad with content changes will produce a Save or Don’t save prompt:

      Notepad-settings

      Notepad-save-prompt

Starting with the Notepad version 11.2307.22.0 update, Notepad will start automatically saving your session state allowing you to close Notepad without any interrupting dialogs and then pick up where you left off when you return. Notepad will automatically restore previously open tabs as well as unsaved content and edits across those open tabs. Saved session state does not impact any of your files, though, and it is still your choice whether to save or discard unsaved changes to files anytime you close a tab.

You can turn this feature off in app settings if you would prefer to have a fresh start every time you open Notepad.
