I have an 2 external cd/dvd burners and this is happening with both. They are plugged directly into a USB port on the laptop, not into a USB hub. Just bought a new one since I thought it was the drive but apparently not. I recently was upgraded to ver. 23H2 and now the drives do not function.  I can’t say that this happened directly as a result of the upgrade but original functioned fine until recently. Burning programs (Ashampoo Burning Studio 23 and 2023 and Nero Burning ROM) all report “failure to write”. The drive shows up in the file management programs but when I click on it I get the message “Incorrect function F:\”

An additional item. If I right click on the drive in a file managment program and then click “eject”, the cd drawer opens. Obviously the operating system recognizes the drive. I’m assuming it’s a setting somewhere that got changed.

      Try the following –

Right-click on the drive and select Properties.

Select the Recording tab, and check the settings.

      Example –

Only the first 4 tabs come up. “Recording” does not appear. Is there another way to get to it?

I have gone through Device Manager and discovered that the drive was set for DVD Region 2.  The US is region 1. I reset it but it still fails to record.

I have determined that it is definitely a settings issue. I turned off “real time protection” and the recording tab was there in “properties”, I was able to watch a DVD and record an audio CD. Turned “real time protection” back on. Any suggestions as to what setting is causing this would be greatly appreciated. Mean time I have this work around.

Look for an entry called NoCDBurning in these two registry locations.

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If it exists, deleting it and rebooting “should” restore the Recording tab and allow you burn programs to the drive.
