AskWoody_MVPJuly 24, 2023 at 11:52 am #2575430I wouldn’t take the statistics cited in the top one-third of the article as an indicator of anything. Wait six months and compare average monthly users. Then get back to me.
If you do anything in the Fediverse without having something to do with Mastodon, you’re not really doing the Fediverse and its openness justice. I am not alone in this opinion.
I don’t know why people place more faith and trust in Zuckerberg than in Musk. So no, Threads is not going to be safer or more rational than Twitter. People are just trading one Evil Master for another. Again, just an opinion.

AskWoody PlusJuly 24, 2023 at 11:54 am #2575432The air is already escaping Threads’ balloon.
Instagram’s Twitter competitor Threads is reportedly fast losing steam, a massive 70 per cent decline from its highest in early July… the number of daily active users on Threads dropped for the second week down to 13 million, “a 70 per cent decline from a July 7 high point.”
By comparison, Twitter’s daily active users are around 200 million.

I have no idea what he’s up to…
…and I don’t think he does either.

I get a popover ad on that site which won’t go away and prevents me from seeing their site without giving away personal information. They clearly have nothing to do with freedom or privacy.
At least here I get a summary of what this project purports to be about, without having to give away personal information to read about them.

Out of curiosity, I tried visiting that site. I saw the overlay you mention. There was an X in the upper right corner which made the overlay disappear when I clicked on it, and then I was able to look around the site without further ado.

AskWoody PlusAugust 14, 2023 at 8:00 pm #2581034Weird, I did not see the X to close either until I reduced the browser zoom level to 80%. In the future when I can’t close a request I guess I can try zooming out (which shouldn’t be needed). I was curious too regarding the projectlibertyaction.com website. Why one person saw a way to close the overlay and another person did not.

AskWoody PlusAugust 15, 2023 at 12:21 am #2581065Huh, that IS strange. In my case, the zoom was normal (at 100%) and no special action was needed to see the X.
Maybe an AskWoody reader versed in browser technology can offer some possible reasons for this seeming inconsistency.

AskWoody PlusJuly 24, 2023 at 4:05 pm #2575509https://www.macrumors.com/2023/07/06/deleting-threads-profile-also-deletes-instagram/
“Threads, Meta’s alternative to Twitter, has officially launched. But users thinking of installing the social media app just to check it out should be aware that you can’t delete your Threads profile without also deleting your Instagram account.”
Apparently this will change in the future.

AskWoody PlusJuly 25, 2023 at 9:53 am #2575706According to German IT journalist Volker Weber, Threads has not been rolled out in the EU : https://vowe.net/2023/07/05/closing-the-chapter-on-surveillance-capitalism/
After this court ruling, one wonders if it ever will be.1 user thanked author for this post.

AskWoody PlusJuly 26, 2023 at 3:47 pm #2575983“Is it worth switching from Twitter to Threads? I’d say so, as long as you realize that the challenger is very new and won’t sport every bell and whistle you might be accustomed to.”
In order to do this, I would first have to have a Twitter account, which I do not and then I would have to create an Instagram account, which since it is owned by Zuckerberg, I have no interest in doing.
Oh well, I guess I won’t be able to play with the cool kids.

AskWoody PlusJuly 28, 2023 at 1:45 pm #2576365Meta plans retention ‘hooks’ for Threads as more than half of users leave app
Meta Platforms (META.O) executives are heavily focused on boosting retention on their new Twitter rival Threads, after the app lost more than half of its users in the weeks following its buzzy launch, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees on Thursday.
“Obviously, if you have more than 100 million people sign up, ideally it would be awesome if all of them or even half of them stuck around. We’re not there yet,” he said.

AskWoody PlusAugust 14, 2023 at 1:19 pm #2580990Threads is dying.
Threads App Usage Down 79% After a Month
Even in the US, where engagement was initially higher, time spent with the app is down 85% from the initial buzz of the launch..
The Threads Android app peaked at 49.3 million daily active users worldwide on July 7, according to Similarweb estimates. But on August 7, the app was down to 10.3 million daily active users.
In the US, peak usage for Threads was 2.3 million daily active users on July 7, compared with about 576,000 as of August 7.
The average amount of time daily active users spent with the app started out at about 14 minutes, worldwide, but was significantly higher in the US: nearly 21 minutes on July 7. By August 7, that was down to 3 minutes.
For comparison, X (formerly Twitter) has more than 100 million daily active users on Android alone, and they consistently spend about 25 minutes per day on it…
