Since Office 2013 was a replacement for Office 2010 and Office 2016 could be the replacement for Office 2013 it may be possible some features will migrate to Office 365 but the two versions could remain apart as Office 2013 has been separate from Office 365. Or maybe there’ll be a replacement for Office 365??

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Office365 is not a set of apps, it’s a subscription service. When you subscribe you get Office 2013 to install locally. So, it makes no sense to compare Office365 to Office 2013, as there is no comparison possible. Office365 is a way to access, among other things, an installable version of Office.

I don’t know how Microsoft will handle it, but there are some indications that you will get automatically updated. This is the info that makes me think that will be the case:

So enterprises will be able to slow down the updating, implying that normal users won’t. Still to be confirmed, though.

      Yes:

Office 365 Personal and Home users will be able to start manually installing Office 2016 apps for Windows on September 22 from Office.com.
Microsoft will begin pushing out the new Office 2016 apps via automatic updates in October 2015.

If the Microsoft publicity is to be believed, Office 365 users will always have the latest versions of the various programs. On this site, you can read the following:

      “Full installed Office applications
Always have the latest, full installed versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Access and capture your ideas however you work best—using a keyboard, pen, or touchscreen.”

      “Always up to date
With an active Office 365 Home subscription, you never have to worry about upgrading your Office, because you always have access to the latest Office applications, features, and services.”

“With Office 365 subscription plans you get the full, installed Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Access. (Publisher and Access are available on PC only.) You can install Office 365 across multiple devices, including PCs, Macs, Android tablets, Android phones, iPad, and iPhone. In addition, with Office 365 you get services like online storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. When you have an active Office 365 subscription, you always have the most up-to-date version of the Office applications.”
