    Guys,

Glad to be a part of the Forum! My Windows 10 Machine lacks the TPM/CPU requirements to run Windows 11. It works great! I really have no interest in buying a new computer. I have about 25 years of computing experience. Since about 50% can’t run Windows 11 on their Windows 10 PC’s, this will be a huge blow of Microsoft does not take action. My ideas. (I submitted these in the Feedback Hub:

1.) Extend Windows 10 updates for another 3-5 years.

2.) Extend Windows 10 updates only for systems that don’t have the TPM/CPU requirements for another 3-5 years.

3.) Release a legacy version of Windows 11, for Windows 10 systems that can’t upgrade under the current CPU/TPM requirements.

Also, how long will Windows Defender get updates on Windows 10 after Windows 10 reaches EOL? I heard that some machines are still getting updates for Windows Defender on Windows 8.1. Thanks!

Extend Windows 10 updates for another 3-5 years.

I am sure that Microsoft will issue ESU for Windows 10 Enterprise.

Extend Windows 10 updates only for systems that donโ€™t have the TPM/CPU requirements for another 3-5 years.

Will be supported with the ESU

Release a legacy version of Windows 11, for Windows 10 systems that canโ€™t upgrade under the current CPU/TPM requirements.

      Won’t happen.

You can easily install Windows 11 on unsupported PCs although there is nothing to gain.

I doubt they will release a “legacy” version.

But I bet that like Win7, there will be a “small business” way to get ESU’s.ย  I walk into too many small to medium businesses and recognize WAY too many Windows 10 in use.

For a home user where proving that you are following best practices, protecting customer data etc is not required, if the computer is still operational in late 2025, it is likely it will work fine with Windows 11 (using one of the bypasses to install).ย  Or, if you prefer, just keep running Windows 10 without security patches, with some antivirus turned on.ย  Be aware that there is a higher risk from any internet connected program, and if your firewall is imperfect, even from being connected to the router, so make sure to aggressively backup (keeping 3 staggered in time full backups) so you can recover if you get ransomware.

For a business user, we will see.ย  In general, small businesses would be wise to follow the practices that famous medium size businesses use.ย  Retiring computers, or at least replacing their hard drives every approximately 5 years reduces the chance of unexpected drive or computer failure.ย  For most businesses, backup is not done as perfectly as it should be, so the data or time lost from a computer failure is much more than the cost of a computer, so preventative replacement is wise.ย  On the other hand a business that has all data in a cloud and has interchangeable “dumb terminal” type computers can use them until they fail (setting aside any security issues) and swap them from the stockpile in minutes.

As you say, MS antivirus for Windows 7 still gets definition updates, so I would expect those for Windows 10 to be indefinite.

Well at least they did put it in a box marked Important…

Of course who would have seen that post, certainly not me!

Microsoft’s announcement today is the company’s way of saying, “Nope. No extension. Sorry, not sorry.”

For those of you that want to keep using Windows 10, there is always the possibility of installing Windows 10 2019 LTSC or Windows 10 2021 LTSC (IoT).

      Code:
      https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-enterprise-ltsc-2019

      https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-enterprise-ltsc-2021

      https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-iot-enterprise-ltsc-2021

You’ll have to buy an OEM key however or use other “methods”.

On a sidenote, I can confirm that I’m still receiving Microsoft Defender updates on my W8.1 machine eventhough it’s not even fully updated with latest Cumulative Update.

      Answer:

Yes.ย  They just announced an ESU program for Windows 10.ย  They did not indicate cost however, but they clearly indicate that it will be available “for consumers” as well as businesses.

A logged-in askwoody members only thread doesn’t look likely for this news.

They just announced an ESU program for Windows 10

A better option at a fraction of cost would be 0Patch Pro.

Not if you are a business user. My Cyber insurance vendor requires Microsoft approved patches.
