I have just acquired a new notebook with WiFI built in. I have never tried wireless networking, but am about to take a trip to Europe, and would like to be able to make use of WiFi hotspots. I’m not clear what is involved in setting up the computer. Besides Windows wireless networking, I have Intel PROSet/Wireless installed. I normally use wired networking in the office and at home.

Is there as simple guide to how to get started? I’d prefer to set things up before leaving to avoid fussing around at the site. Will the computer just connect, or should I anticipate problems?

Most machines with the WiFi built in all is required is that the device is enabled, which is by default. The next step is to turn on your machine.

The best thing to do, is go to a local hotspot, and see if you can make a connection. I have several neighbors who are running wireless and I can connect through theirs. When the machine is on, and you have the “network” icon shown in the systray right click as see what hotspots have been found, then select any of the ones listed. Be aware that some hotspots will require a credit card number. Each provider will have a different methode of payment if there is a charge.
