This is getting really old. It seems that my Word just isn’t happy. Is there a list of reasons, fixes, etc. I might look at? It started with the wrapped text in box issue a while back. But there’s more to it. It seems if I do much of anything, especially with headers and footers, it crashes. I can’t get any work done. I’ve repaired it. Reinstalled it. This is a pretty new installation of WinXP and OfficeXP, say 1.5 months ago. I’ve had not much luck with Word. Everything else works like a charm. Problem is, documentation is becoming a big part of my job. Any suggestions appreciated. I’m really tired disappointed

Please post any errors that may be related to word from your error logs (source and ID# please) Go to start | run and type eventvwr.msc

This could be hardware related – I am not sure. Try this:
Go to start | run and type sfc /scannow (that will replace bad system files)
          Then download UnPnP.exe
          Read about it at GRC
It may sound like there is no association with Office – but it has worked sometimes with similar office errors in the past.

Tried that to no avail. Also tried everything else in this thread. I’m learning new things, but getting more tired of computers by the minute!

      Hi Bryan:
While it’s difficult to know for sure, I would wonder why only Word is affected if there’s a hardware problem. I would try the steps listed in post 197827. Reinstalling Word doesn’t change the normal.dot unless you delete it, so I’d be curious if you still have problems after you get to that step.
      Cheers,

Sure still happens. I’m going to try the copy the document to a new one trick for this particular document. Hopefully it’s the document. If so…. Yep looks like it… Why is this happening so much!!! I want a simple word processor that doesn’t break so often and I can get my work done .

This must be so frustrating for you – I hope that this will help!

          Do a search for:
          *.tmp
          ~$*.*
          Delete all

          then try this:
go to Start | run | browse

next browse to the directory that winword.exe is located in. My directory is different because I did an administrative install.
          Example path:
“C:Program FilesOffice XPOffice10WINWORD.EXE” add the /a switch to the path (while still in ‘open’ dialog.
          “C:Program FilesOffice XPOffice10WINWORD.EXE” /a
          Then click OK
          Do you still crash?

Sure is frustrating. Phil had pointed me to those things to try. I did and it didn’t help. However, I’ve copied the document body to a fresh document again and it seems to be working. I’m 10 minutes without it hanging anyway.

            Tired,

            Bryan

I hadn’t thought about corrupt documents because I thought (assumed) it was happening frequently with many different documents. If you want a good outline of steps to take to check out & fix a corrupt document, see this article.
              Hope this helps.

Phil: Actually it DOES happen with many documents. You helped me with the last one which had the wrapped graphic in the header. I’ve since found that graphcis work in the header only if there is no other text in the table. Anyway, it happens for different reasons, often, and sometimes doing the doc copy to fresh one works. I’m still tired and frustrated and just want to get some work done instead of messing with this all the time.
