I must be naive. i thought a guest account would provide some kind of safety or security, or blocking, or something from primary account. Just created one in Win 8.1, and switched user to guest. The desktop is different, slimmed down, but I can open every file, spreadsheet, financial statements, etc.

So, am I naive, or stupid or both? What am I missing? Why bother with a guest account? What good are they?

Try making changes to the system like installing a new program or turning off Windows firewall, using a Guest account. You should find you can’t do it unless you are in an administrative account. If you want to protect individual files or folders, you need to right click on the item, select properties, and click on the Security tab. here you can limit access to just administrators if you like.
