AskWoody PlusJune 3, 2024 at 4:28 am #2677511You deprecated the use of “Redacted for Privacy Purposes”, but as a test I just used WhoisThisDomain to look up askwoody.com. Should I be worried?…

ManagerJune 3, 2024 at 10:58 am #2677611So because my house is where Askwoody does business I was actually recommended to privatize the location so that I can keep some personal privacy. I’m not a retail business. And we kinda “sell” privacy as a good thing around here so the answer is “it depends”. I’d argue for retail that yes, you do want to know. For what I provide here, I think you can respect that I need my privacy just like you do.

AskWoody PlusJune 3, 2024 at 10:37 am #2677605When I developed my first web page in 2005, it was a given back then to use one’s registrar’s “privacy” service in order to prevent bad actors from seeing our names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses in order to prevent SPAM (or worse).
One could (and can) still be emailed via the registrar’s registrant-specific email address on WHOIS, which then gets forwarded to the registrant, as indicated above by WSAlsy.

GuestJune 3, 2024 at 3:24 pm #2677663Just curious how this differs from Whois.com, a popular free online service which has been around for years. E.g., for hoka.com:

AskWoody PlusJune 4, 2024 at 3:21 am #2677831One thing to note about making judgements of sites based on their lack of WHOIS data is that WHOIS was considered incompatible with European Union GDPR laws, so pretty much any EU WHOIS will be redacted. It doesn’t mean that the site is shady, but I do accept that it makes it more difficult to determine if it is or not. In the case of HIKE, their WHOIS claims that they’re based in The Netherlands (hence the redaction), but a quick Google seems to return mixed reviews of them.

AskWoody PlusJune 4, 2024 at 7:26 pm #2677984Whenever I think about ordering online from a vendor i’ve not dealt with before I like to know where they are located and what their phone number is. And without a phone number or a location there’s no way I will do business with them. That’s a deal breaker. So I really appreciate having this application that you shared. It’s quite handy

GuestJune 5, 2024 at 12:24 am #2678003Thanks for the news of this handy utility. It’s probably going to be more convenient than using whois.com in a browser. Alas, it still can’t tell me who is lurking behind the reseller/anonymizer registrant companies. But I probably should just assume that any retailer hiding like that is shady, lazy, or clueless.

AskWoody PlusJune 5, 2024 at 12:18 pm #2678161Thank you. Long ago and far away one could easily look up TLD details on ICANN and IANA or via Registrars. But that changed to make the Registrant’s and Administrator’s contact information more private. I opine it’s not always a better thing.
