Who knows a good e-mail virus/malware scanner?

I have a paid subscription to an anti-virus suite that includes email scanning. It identifies problems from time to time. My sub is about to run out, so I am wondering if I can get the same level of email protection from any freeware anti-virus products, either stand-alone, or which would run together with MSE. Advice much appreciated.

I use Eudora 7.1, which has some of the same features as MailWasher – ie, you can leave mail over a given size on the ISP and decide whether to download or delete it. If you set the size limit to say 10kB it “catches” most spam.

I have tried to thank all of you below – but TL doesn’t seem to want to register my thanks – thanks anyway. Will take a look at Avast, though I have prefered Avira in the past. Maybe MSE can be persuaded to inlcude email protection.

What email client are you using now? Some anti-spam solutions integrate with the email client, while others run as a proxy and work with any email.

The latest version of Avast 6.0 scans include email.

I’d recommend using MailWasherto allow you to scan your mail well before it gets to your machine.

This downloads just the headers and plain text from the mail server and allows you to identify spam and unexpected attachments. Once the bad stuff has been detected you can delete those emails directly from the server and open your usual mail program to download the rest.

Follow it up with Avast – which seems to be highly recommended and (as mentioned above) will scan incoming mail

The free version of Mailwasher only allows one email account…

I have the old version which was unlimited and before they started to charge for it..

I rarely use it now..

I only use it now when I am working in XP so I can check my mail that In would normally d/l to Windows 7..

Like I said, the old free version which I have is a full version before they decided to sell it..

In the old version there is the ‘bounce’ feature that allows you to bounce the email back to the spammer…

I don’t think that’s in the new paid version….

Incorrect. Paid version, Mailwasher Pro, allows multiple accounts and bouncing. I use it on 4 PCs.

If you are using MailWasher, I would recommend Benign, from the same stable. Details at http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/benign . It is not an anti-virus as such, but has the ability to strip out nasty references which may be embedded in incoming emails. I have been using it for years and am very happy with it.

I was referring to the OLD FREE VERSION allowing unlimited mail accounts.

I wasn’t sure about the bounce feature in the paid version.

Please do not “bounce” mail already accepted onto your mail server. The connection with the true sender is closed, so some 99+% of bounces will go to the victim whose name was falsely listed as the sender. Why torture that person?
