Today on starting my computer an error message appeared telling me that Stimon had failed to load. Since my system appears to work perfectly OK I just wonder hwta Stimon actually does and do I need it?

From Pacs-Portal: Still Image Monitor – Stimon.exe enables a USB still-image device (such as a scanner) to initiate data transfer to a program. For example, if your scanning device has a scan button, it may start a program and begin scanning when you press it. Create a shortcut and start it manually when needed if your scanner otherwise fails to scan. Required for all HP scanners to work

Not just HP scanners in my experience. I have an Acer USB scanner and it wouldn’t work if I unchecked stimon.exe in the Startup tab of the System Configuration utitlity.

I have a Canon scanner and if I remember correctly, if Stimon fails to load on boot up, you can go to Start -Run- and type in Stimon and hit ok and it works.

You should be able to safely disable STIMON in the MSCONFIG utility (Start – Run – MSCONFIG). This will not solve whatever problem is causing it not to load, but it will get rid of your error message – and most scanners and cameras will work just fine without it.
