Now, in April 2025, NordVPN chimes in with its own updated tests. The reviewers are very specific about Edge’s security — or lack of it. The most severe criticism is that Edge is updated against new threats much less frequently than other browsers:

Edge is only updated twice a year, which is ridiculous as malware, scam, and privacy and security violation techniques advance so rapidly. Most modern browsers get updated once per month or two, so Edge really lags behind.

This is a weird false assertion which could easily have been checked.

Edge gets major updates every four weeks on a defined schedule:

Edge also gets security updates up to six times each month as required:

Comments at the bottom of the NordVPN article indicate that it was written at least six years ago and has hardly been updated since then. It’s likely that the Edge section actually reviews the original Edge Legacy which was replaced by the current Chromium-based Edge more than five years ago:

Why send an email to your users at the end of 2020 pointing to this ancient article? At least update your information. I was so confused by the MS Edge discussion until I realized how old this is.

      see #2768281 for details..

Given that one can do so much more with mozilla firefox, this is my preferred option. YMMV

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

NordVPN’s article says about Edge: “Its limited extension support, while inconvenient, also means that there is a lesser possibility of installing a malware extension.” It’s not true. Edge runs extensions from both the Chrome Web Store as well as Microsoft’s extensions.

Also, as someone else commented, Edge is updated at least as often as Chrome or Firefox.

I don’t trust NordVPN’s article, though I’ve heard from other sources I consider reliable (Security Now) that Firefox is an excellent secure browser.

Interesting that the “Duck Duck Go” browser wasn’t evaluated. They must not have “paid” NordVPN the minimum amount to get listed.

Wasn’t available for Windows when their article was written years ago.

DuckDuckGo browser on Android is my favourite, and as a fall back on the PC when Firefox (with privacy extensions) doesn’t comply

My brother in law uses a fairly early Chromebook, and it has been OK so far because his use of the internet is mostly email and browsing.  In fact, he has a Windows machine in the closet which he abandoned because he was annoyed by the work of updating it.

Fortunately, he does not yet do anything financial online, but wonders if that will be viable in the next few years.  AND he does care about privacy and security online,  frightened by all the cybersecurity articles he has been reading this year.  He says he uses DuckDuckGo for searching.

Since the hardware is old, his Chromebook stopped getting updates a long time ago.  And we know that old versions of Chrome are less secure than the most current version.

Would it be a good idea to get him a new Chromebook (e.g. Asus) and install Firefox through the Google Play store?  Would using Firefox on that system still be more secure than the Chrome browser?

Similarly, would Firefox on his iPhone 14 be better than Safari?

(At my house, I have used Firefox on Windows since its earliest versions without any problem, so I have never had a reason to switch.  I am on Win 10 Pro 22H2;  Edge is installed but rarely used.)

      Thanks for any advice

Edge also has the worst spellchecker ever!

        What’s bad about it?

It works well for me with the recommended Microsoft Editor enabled.
