I was out for lunch today and decided to get a salad. The only problem was that I couldn’t make up my mind which salad I wanted. How many did I have to choose from?

Assume that I was going to have the ‘main’ and all 5 toss ins with dressing.

You won’t run out of choices anytime soon!
1a) You have 4 choices for the house salad.
1b) You have 2 choices for the size.
2) You have 12 choices for the main ingredient.
3) You can choose 5 toss ins out of 44 items (assuming that all the seasonal items are available), there are 44! / (5! * 39!) possibilities, where 5! = the factorial of 5 = 5 * 4 * 3 *2 * 1. This evaluates to 1,086,008 possibilities.
4) You have 15 choices for the dressing.

All in all, you have 4 * 2 * 12 * 1,086,008 * 15 = 1,563,851,520 possible combinations to choose from, or over one and a half billion!

I don’t think i would include the size as a possible combination factor… regardless of your salad size, it will taste the same with the same ingredients

I would say that Hans got it correct . I thought about the size issue and decided that while it would taste the same, it was a decision that needed to be made and was thus, a different (just) salad.

Jezza is correct – I do normally get a diet pepsi – but no ice (however, I do get the choice of ‘normal’, ‘with lemon’ or ‘with lime’). Finally, the dog is at home (in the garden) and the salad is eaten at work, so those issues don’t come in to it.

I think i may have to start posing puzzles / comments / posts with fictious information to stop Jezza getting a complete picture of me.
