Which printer type is the better one to buy?

As the title says, which type is the better one to buy for someone who enjoys printing things in color, but who only prints maybe 10-20 pages a year? Inkjet or Laser?

Note: PLEASE don’t reply with a specific brand, just the type and why you think it’s the better choice.

Replies

Laser printer would be best as the ink in an inkjet printer would dry up. Toner does not have that problem.

I am in the same category as you and I prefer Laser. Laser toner is a powder and does not dry up like inkjets do. BUT, an inexpensive one is hard to find and the toner replacements are expensive. You have to buy red, yellow, blue and B&W cartridges. (I buy remanufactured toners.) I was lucky to find an inexpensive Samsung ALL-IN-ONE for about $200 just around the time HP purchased them.

I think it depends on what you’re going to print and how those 10-20 pages are distributed time-wise over the course of a year. If you’re going to print photos an ink-jet will generally do a better job with less fuss. I’ve never had a problem with ink jets drying up as long as I print one page a month with a combination of colors. In Linux Mint I can print a so-called test page each month that has yellow, cyan, magenta, and black (both photo black and text black). Those 32 pages (your 20 plus a monthly test page) will not use much ink; a set of cartidges for, say, $80 – $100 will probably last a few years.

I personally got myself a relatively inexpensive mono laser printer as soon as the prices came down.  I never did much color printing and when I did I found myself having to do a Head cleaning procedure to remove the dried ink from the printer heads. That procedure used more ink, and then the price of ink got crazy.

When the rare occasion comes up that I need a photo printed I go to a place (usually drug stores or office supply stores) and they print them for me for much less than the cost of owning an Inkjet.

Being 20 something in the 70's was far more fun than being 70 something in the insane 20's
