Which desktop XP apps will work on Win7 laptop?

:confused: Which of the following Desktop XP programs/apps can I install on a new Laptop Win 7 PC:

MS OFFICE 2003:
Custom Installed only:
MS Office Word
MS Office Excel
Quicken Windows 2006
Quicken Ver. 8 for DOS
SPFPC Ver. 02.00 (a DOS app)
MS DOS Ver. 5.1.2600
(? An XP component ?)
MS DOS Ver. 6

I want to move off of my desktop PC altogether, but I have several older DOS-type programs
that I still need to use. Also, I would like to continue to be able to use, say, some Office 2003 apps.

If there is someone that has great skill in these kinds of questions, I would appreciate some info
on which can or cannot be successfully installed on the laptop.

This is information that users who want to transition from XP to Windows 7 need to know, so it would be a valuable service to current XP users to post it here, but those who have already gone to Windows 7 are more likely to know the answer. Maybe you should also post the question on the Windows 7 forum.

MS Office 2003 (word, excel, etc.) will install on win 7 and Quicken windows 2006 should install. Nothing in DOS will install easily, there may be work-arounds as in DOSBOX (I don’t have the link handy).
Just remember that MS Office 2003 has reached end of life so there will be no support for that or for Quicken windows 2006 anymore.

i have been running MS Office 2003 in my desktop & notebook with W7 Home Premium without any problem.
to determine which program gives (or might give you trouble), open control panel in w7, and in top right search window type “compatibility”.
next scree will let you see “Run programs made for previous version of Windows”

I would guess that most of your apps would still run on Win7, but I haven’t tried these specific versions.

What you can do is ‘run your desktop inside your laptop’. Download a copy of VirtualBox (it’s free), and you can run Windows XP and even DOS on virtual machines (VMs) on your laptop. Depending on the particular version of XP you have, you may be able to transfer the license from your desktop to the XP machine running on your laptop. The operating system licenses might be a little tricky. (Microsoft seems to want you to pay more than once for your copy Windows.) Any required licenses for the applications are almost surely transferable from the old desktop to the new VM.

I am currently running Windows 7 VMs on my Win8 laptop, that contain everything I previously had on older Win7 desktop machines. They work perfectly!

I highly recommend you check into this if you want to ‘keep your old desktop, but get rid of the box.’ There are a number of VirtualBox alternatives, but I have never found one, not even the paid ones, that works as well as VirtualBox.

JNygren – Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the process is beyond my skill level. What I was looking for was a yes/no kind of answer as to which apps could or could not be installed under Win7. I can see now that like so many things with today’s world not much is simple anymore. Besides, I feel like I should get going to make the Win7 laptop my primary PC, and only keep the old desktop alive for a short time. If I had gotten started trying to learn how to install and use the VM process a good long time before now, I would probably be better off. I am 83 years old and I don’t know how much longer I can adapt to some of the “new” technologies. It is mostly about getting tired of having to try to keep up with things.

There is a skill level required to install VirtualBox, but I’m pretty sure you have it. go to:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

and click on the link that says:

VirtualBox 4.3.10 for Windows hosts x86/amd64

If you use Internet Explorer to download it, it will give you the option to Run or Save.

Select Run, and then click through the Installation process.

I’m a bit younger than you – 82 next week – but had no trouble installing VirtualBox recently. It’s no more difficult than installing anything else. That said, I didn’t succeed it getting my old scanner to work, but I shall keep it installed and experiment with Linux when I have the time.

I want to thank each and every one of you that have responded to my query.

For now, I just feel a bit overwhelmed by having to learn yet another bunch of
processes for what little I do with my PC. I purchased two massive books that
are for Win7, and I am trying to work my way through, at least the parts that
will get me by. I should not have stuck with XP to its bitter end, but rather I
should have installed Win7 a couple years ago, in order to have the time to
get comfortable with it before having to abandon XP. I still use some DOS
processes, and applications, and QBasic programs I created. So, in order to
continue using them, I am going to keep my XP desktop in play, but remove
the cable modem from it, and move my Internet requirements to my Win7
laptop. I will make whatever downloaded files I need to feed the DOS processes
and ‘import’ them to the XP PC.

I have software that I have moved on up the line of operating systems that works on Windows 7 and Windows 8, this certainly includes WinXP software. The success of moving applications (software) depends on how you think you can move it. If you have the original installation disks and licenses you should be successful. If you downloaded the file and saved it in your downloads folder you should be golden also. The download filename should have a .exe filename extension. The .exe filename extension on an applications name translates into the application having all it needs to work, ie: library files such as .dll’s math and etc.
If I install an application that don’t work I simply go to the control panel, uninstall and uninstall the app and no harm is done. Microsoft has done a good job protecting user’s from “shooting themselves in the foot”.
I am an 83 year old woman, I build my own computers and maintain them myself with help from “dumb” questions I post on Google, Info in Win Secrets and various forums. I am not intimidated by my computer it is an excellent resource for useful information and entertainment. I currently have two desktops, a laptop, ipad2, nexus7 and a kindle for reading books.
