Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody_MVPMay 30, 2020 at 9:52 am #2267264Despite Woody’s “Earlier this week, Microsoft revealed that, …”, the linked KB4011287 support article is at least three years old and was previously posted in this forum in 2017:
Windows updates might not be installed with Fast Startup in Windows 10
It only applies if someone uses shutdown when a restart is clearly required by Windows Update.

GuestMay 30, 2020 at 7:05 pm #2267370I have always kept Fast Startup disabled, largely because I’ve noticed a degradation in performance if left on over time. Symptoms are the same as if you left a Windows PC running for days or when you use hibernate instead of shut down. A full restart clears the cruft and lets Windows start fresh with every session. This is why I shut down all of my computers (except my phones) overnight, and power them back on in the morning.

AskWoody LoungerMay 30, 2020 at 9:52 pm #2267400off topic but command line- powercfg /a tells me my acer pc’s don’t have required firmware- and they both have ssd’s- one SATA(I think and one Pci *** whatever that looks like a stick of RAM. Dont have it handy and dont recall the exact term. 512 GB tho….LOL
So as ssd’s and Fast Start and hibernate aren’t friendly, it’s just as well.
ARE we going to just skip May patch? I wouldn’t mind a bit.

On my laptop : Fast Startup in on. I never shut down my laptop which is on 24/7/365 (restart only after Windows updates, software install..) system goes into hibernation… never seen any performance degradation. OS installed on M.2 Nvme SSD.

That’s what I am wondering. Why the article by Woody but no change in Defcon status?

AskWoody_MVPMay 31, 2020 at 8:43 am #2267470Anyone who follows Woody’s advice should be getting updates tomorrow:
If Pause is set to expire before the end of May, or if you don’t have a Pause in effect, you should set up a patching defense perimeter that keeps patches off your machine for the rest of this month.
