AskWoody PlusApril 29, 2020 at 2:50 pm #2257586Thanks Woody for a very clear and concise summary of a bewildering situation. I know we’re still on DefCon 2, but would it be worth adding a final short paragraph along the lines of “Sit tight for now folks, don’t install the April updates just yet as the next show doesn’t begin until 12th May!”?

Sit tight for now folks, don’t install the April updates just yet as the next show doesn’t begin until 12th May!
(and there aren’t any pressing reasons to install the April patches.)

AskWoody PlusMay 2, 2020 at 10:47 am #2258412Yesterday, I installed KB4549951 for Win 10 1909. I figured if you and others did it without any negative impact to your systems, I would give it a try. Apparently I needed the update because things seem to be working better than before. No printer issues, no local profile issues, no hardware issues. Speed unaffected; even somewhat improved. Even my new install of Quicken 2020, done before the update and backup, is working well.
As always, I backed up my computer and created a system image before the install. The only issue I may have is that the version of Win 10 on my computer remains 10.0.18363. Is that a problem?
Regards,
CAS

AskWoody PlusApril 29, 2020 at 5:23 pm #2257640This is another example of why I always do a drive image (Macrium) every month just before installing any Windows Updates or updating to the next version. Life is way too short to go through anything like the “time-sink” gymnastics and full-of-potholes approach presented by Shawn Brink at Tenforums. I’d rather just take 20 minutes to restore from the image and then wait until the carnage is resolve (hopefully?) by Microsoft. Pretty much easy-peasy!

GuestApril 30, 2020 at 4:13 pm #2257920Here’s where I stand, as to my 6-week-old Win 10 1909 Pro brand-new PC:
…..
1. I can’t refer to my file copy of my Anon AW post sometime Feb. or March, as to repeated shortcomings of Win 10, my copy lost when my old reliable Win7 Pro machine entirely died. In very brief: updating drivers, despite my Group Pol setting against same; forced upgrades of potentially very-buggy Updates; inability to pick updates as was with Win7 Pro; and, since then, dictatorial behavior of Win 10, in at least one case removing an executable, freeware, ~simple~ business app I’ve used for years, and had never found it to be malware (yes, I’ve always had Win 10’s anti-file-tamper software turned off, so that can’t be the reason); and not to forget, their announcement that, in effect, the customers will now be the beta-testers.
…..
2. Thus: My real glee, late night a few weeks ago, having also installed sidebyside, a fresh install of Linux Mint Cinnamon, immediately updated thru Linux, and since then, discovering/ enjoying surfing on the Net on Linux with Ffox. I still use Win10 daily, but I am slowly weaning myself off of that, having used M$ Win since ’97 with Win 95. I am eager to get to the point where my default daily boot will be LinuxMint; with Win10 simply taking up space for rare use, if any. I am a professional, similar to Woody. I ~detest~ having tools which are unusable. I will be glad to kiss MS goodbye, once and for all. Cheers!1 user thanked author for this post.

AskWoody_MVPApril 30, 2020 at 7:32 pm #2257945Regarding the May 2020 Update (version 2004) release, MS recently decided to release a new build into the RP ring this Thursday April 30:
And Mary Jo Foly of ZDNet has recently updated her article:
https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-rolls-out-windows-10-2004-release-preview-ahead-of-expected-may-release-to-mainstream-users/Update (April 30): As I mentioned on the Windows Weekly podcast recently, these dates were pushed back by Microsoft, possibly because the team wanted to patch a zero-day exploit before pushing the code to OEMs and users. I hear OEMs now are set to get the code May 5; developers on May 12; and general availability is slated for May 28. Again, Microsoft has not announced this officially and these dates may change yet again.

AskWoody PlusMay 2, 2020 at 4:43 pm #2258488“Susan still hasn’t gotten to the bottom of the v4 Printer Driver disconnected printer bug.”
What is a “v4 Printer Driver”? I don’t know if I have one or not. I suspect “v4 Printer Driver” is some sort of short hand I don’t understand.
I have an HP Envy 5540_series6938 printer. The driver version is 17.60.0.5100.

AskWoody PlusMay 3, 2020 at 2:49 pm #2258685I went to two discussions I was referred to here (not sure PKCano was replying to me) and one link within a discussion here. Mostly I did not understand.
I learned that I can see if I have a v4 driver by opening Print Management on Windows 10. Unfortunately, when I tried, I also learned that Windows 10 1909 has no such thing as Print Management (printmanagement.msc) and cannot locate it though run, search, CMD or PowerShell.
I have learned the v4 driver is “bundled with the operating system”, whatever that means. I guess the driver comes with Windows 10.
How about this?
If I have Windows 10 1909 should I assume I have the v4 print driver?
If I am a simple home user, will I be able to print with my wireless printer connected to my home network if I download the April 2020 patches when the time comes?
Thank you. Try to keep it simple.

AskWoody PlusMay 3, 2020 at 4:08 pm #2258700There is no Print Management listed under Administrative Tools.
And so, I have Windows 10 Home 1909. I am thinking I don’t have Print Management because I don’t have Windows 10 PRO.

AskWoody PlusMay 3, 2020 at 5:11 pm #2258725Got there differently on my Windows 10 Home v1909:
Settings>Devices>Printers and Scanners>Microsoft XPS Document Writer>Manage>Printer Properties>Advanced
Wound up on the same page as picture you sent. I see Microsoft XPS Document Writer v4. It is greyed out.
I have never written or printed an XPS Document and don’t know what it is. So, I guess if I never use the XPS Document Writer this bug will not be a problem for me.
Right?

AskWoody LoungerMay 3, 2020 at 3:03 pm #2258688Good Day, so are we still at hold for installing April Patches or see if we can pause again? I have not changed the pause, so I may have everything download when I turn on the computer.
EDIT: I might just wait until Patch Tuesday in May as I don’t want to have any abnormalities come down the chute!

AskWoody PlusMay 5, 2020 at 5:49 am #2259530I grow tired of defending my machines against Microsoft on a monthly basis in order to have working computers. And now thanks to COVID-19 I must update (or wushowhide) my brother’s machine over the telephone.
Linux would be quite attractive if I did not already have a large body of code which I wrote catering to Windows peculiarities. (With Ubuntu I can click “Update” and walk away.)
I am just grateful that I can check Ask Woody to find the potential problems with a given update before lowering the “quality deferral” setting to let it install.

GuestMay 7, 2020 at 8:48 am #2260466I’m new to Windows 10 and my computer is about 3 months old running Windows 10 Pro version 1909 and after March update for Windows Update I have elected to use the Group policy (#2). I have decided not to install the April update, KB4549951. Do I have to use Wushowhide to hide the KB4549951 or do nothing at all? Thanks for your response!

PKCano
ManagerMay 7, 2020 at 8:52 am #2260480Group Policy “2” (notify download/install) should prevent KB4549951 from downloading until/unless you click on the “Download” button. And on May Patch Tuesday it should be superseded by the May CU and will most likely just disappear (if you have set Quality deferrals to 0 with the GUI pulldown.
See AKB2000016.

GuestMay 7, 2020 at 9:45 am #2260509Hey folks.
Haven’t seen many reports re install of “current” (i.e., Apr’20) Win7 ESU patches, so…
on behalf of the ~29% of pcs still running Win7 (link below), figured I’d add a data point:Win7 SP1 Pro (x64)
Installed Apr’20 Win7 CU (KB4550964), rebooted,
Installed Apr’20 Win7 SSU (KB4550738), rebooted.No install issues, no apparent post-installation issues.
Hope this helps.
