Where is password for HomeGroup

I have a new laptop (with Win 7HP) that I am trying to network with 2 desktop PC’s running Win 7HP.
The 2 desktops have no problems networking. I cannot find the password that allows the laptop to join a homegroup. When I go to help, it states I should open HomeGroup and click View. I have View to click.
Anyway to get the password.

Have you created a Homegroup on one computer? You get a password to use with the other computers when you do (at least you’re supposed to).

I’m still stuck myself though since after creating the homegroup and dutifully writing down the password, none of the other computers would accept the password.

Bryon, Have you checked to see if IPv6 has been disabled?

Have you tried leaving the homegroup on the machine you used to create the group? You should be able to leave the homegroup in Control Panel | HomeGroup, and then go to Windows Explorer and create a new homegroup or you could create the new homegroup on a different Win7 machine and attempt to join the new homegroup on the other two computers.

I forgot my homegroup password. How do I find it?

Click Start, type homegroup, and then press ENTER. Click View or print the homegroup password.

OK. I did this before I posted the first time. “Click Start, type homegroup, and then press ENTER. Click View or print the homegroup password.” and I have NO VIEW to click.
Any other ideas?

When you said the 2 desktops have no problems networking, do you mean you created a homegroup on one and the other was joined to the homegroup? If so, then you had to have entered a password on the joining desktop. To view the password, use one of the desktops on which homegroup is active. You cannot view it on the laptop because it has not yet joined your homegroup.

To confirm you have a homegroup on one of the desktops, go to the Start menu or Control Panel search box, and type homegroup , and click on HomeGroup . If you are in a homegroup on that desktop, you will see the heading Change Homegroup Settings . You can then click on View or print the homegroup password . If no homegroup exists on your computer, you will be informed of the fact, and you can click Create A Homegroup to start the homegroup wizard. Follow the wizard, and then you can write down the generated password to join the other Win7 desktop and laptop to your homegroup.

Things are starting to come back to me. I installed Win 7 on both desktop back in early Nov. I remember having some trouble with “Homegroups” then. I recall that I did something to make the connect work WITHOUT having to join a homegroup.

I now have desktop #1 with a homegroup named “Network” (and available to join) and PC #2 with a homegroup named “Network 2” (and showing “Joined”). Also have the new laptop with no homegroup but is “Available to join”.

Both the desktops are connected via LAN and the laptop is wireless.

When I click on laptop to join a box pop’s up stating that PC #2 has created a homegroup on the network and wants me to join it. The only password I have is the one from PC #1 (which doesn’t work of course). I cannot get the password for PC #2 because I do not have a View button to click. I also do not have any options to “Change Homegroup Settings”.

I have tried to join PC #2 to PC #1 using it’s password. No Go! I use the troubleshooter and get a “Have to have IPv6 enabled. I go the network adapter and the IPv6 protocol is checked. Have uninstalled and reinstalled without success.

I can’t remember how I got the two desktops working without be joined but they work.

Any ideas?

It’s difficult to follow everything here, but let me see if my 2 cents will help.

1) Choose a PC (easiest to choose a wired PC) to set up a Homegroup. If already in a homegroup, choose Leave Homegroup first so you can start from scratch to set up a Homegroup.
*** Note: All PCs have to have the exact same group name i.e. My group name is Myers. ***
2) Set up the Homegroup with this PC. When you do WRITE down the exact password the PC supplies.
3) Go to the second PC and choose Leave Homegroup first, then Join Homegroup. Put in the exact same name for the group, then when asked, enter the exact same password you wrote down a few minutes ago.
4) Go to the 3rd PC and repeat step 3. This should work for both wired and wireless PCs
5) Do the same for all PCs you want in the Homegroup.

Once all PCs have joined the Homegroup, set up all the desired sharing on each PC.

Remember, all PCs have to use the exact same Homegroup name and the password assigned by the first PC.

Hi Ted –
Thanks for the 2 cents. I have been trying some other things before I got your message.
Both my wired desktop report that IPv6 is disabled. When I check, the network cards say that IPv6 is enabled.
Until I get this fixed it does me no good to try and join any homegroup.
