• Where has your disk space gone?

I was down to 25% free space on this XP hard drive. Ran disk cleanup, then defrag. Defrag stopped prematurely. I saw this msg. I went into IE 8.0, told it to delete all temporary files, just like I had told disk clean up. Ran defrag. Still stopped early with these files. So I open a cmd prompt, go to these folders, DIR yahoo*.* and find these files and others of similar size. Date stamp was from 2009 up into 2011. I deleted the files. Defrag ran to completion and I now have 67% free space.

Since I was working via LogMeIn and it was midnight, I did not try and look at the files.

Does anyone know what these files are? I’ve never seen anything like this before.

    thanks –

They appear to be Yahoo Web Pages (The .htm would indicate they are web pages). It appears you were able to manually delete them so all is well. My belief is that it is good to clear the temp. internet files regularly (I clean mine whene the browser closes). This keeps junk out and actually allows faster loading because old web pages don’t have to be checked for newer versions. (These 4 files appear to have totalled over 6 GB)

You may be experiencing a lag time if you are working from a remote computer and system level file manipulations may require
the computer being worked on to be fully restarted. What your seeing may be ghost entries that have not been removed for whatever reason.
Have you done a full reboot after clearing out your browser cache and attempting another defrag??
Also, when you go to run the defragmentor, alow it to “re-analyse” the disk being defragmented.

Try running CCleaner or Privacy Mantra, and then perform a full system boot prior to defragmenting.
The above software applications do a better job, in most instances, than the default windows apps.

Look over your system for reference to a Yahoo addon or toolbar of some type if the entries reappear.

Thanks for the replies. It just seemed strange for .htm files to be 1.5 gb and over 2,000 file fragments per file. Next time I’ll email me one of the culprits. No, too large to do that. I do wish I’d made a copy of just one.

I did tell IE to delete all temporary files. Which did no good at all. Manual deletion was the only thing that worked.
