I see the ‘stuttering’ generally the first time I open File Explorer after waking from hibernation. I’ve learned to ignore it as it only happens the once. I have only one physical drive – an SSD so there’s no spin up time. There is one mapped network drive but the stutter happens when I’ve opened that network drive and am traveling down the tree for a specific folder. My guess is that it is related to OneDrive having to check for sync.

Since I service computers, I often pull a hard drive, or SSD, to manually scan and look for hidden scripts and partitions. Windows 10 (all versions from Enterprise 1607 to Pro 1909) has always been painful to use in this way, since it takes anywhere from ten seconds to twenty minutes to open a user’s folder. Windows 7 is virtually instantaneous when used to scan other drive’s user folder. Linux Mint (or other distro) also works quite effectively when doing a manual look-see and deleting temp files. I’m not sure the issue discussed here isn’t simply a Windows 10 bug, although the advice is excellent in how to address it.
